As posted before Beau Jack was so popular and exciting a lightweight who SOLD OUT MSG 7 times in one year . In the early 1940s when the lightweight division was so deep with great fighters, Beau Jack was the best drawing card for smaller men. His frenetic style on top of a "weightlifters" torso was a joy to behold, as from the first bell he tore into
his opponents with hooks, crosses, bolo punches and uppercuts from every and all angles never taking a backstep...Beau had an iron chin, but sadly his manager booked him fights every week for several years and poor Beau
burnt out after 5 years or so...If not for Ike Williams, Beau would have been the best lightweight as well as the most action filled fighter of the 1940s...Sadly his last years found Beau Jack shining shoes at the world famous Fountainbleau in Miami, Fl.
P.S. There was a reason why a Sandy Saddler or Willie Pep chose not to
challenge Beau Jack for a fight, though both Willie and Sandy fought
some good lightweights...I loved Beau Jack as a fighter who I saw numerous times...Too, too bad ESB fans never got to see the peak Beau in action on film or ringside....

Wow, that's a fight that would be worth the bucks ! I have huge respect for both of these guys. I think Buchanan would show some great boxing here, but Jack would get to him here and there and eventually stop him late. He was a wonderful physical specimen in his prime and you know what they say about swarmers vs boxers...

It's one of the reasons that I'm a died in the wool Buchanan fan...not only was he capable of beautiful boxing skill, but he was incredibly tough, resilient and he had a great fighting spirit.

rc, yes Buchanan was a great boxer for HIS times, BUT he never faced a dynamo as Beau Jack was at Beau's peak. Buchanan would dodge some bullets but Beau Jack was like a Gatling gun pouring it on in volleys of punches from every angle... Jack kod a MASTER BOXER Tippy Larkin and beat a truly great lightweight stylist Willie Joyce in 2 masterpieces. I saw the young Beau outspeed and outpunch a fading but still dangerous Henry Armstrong...Beau beats Buchanan who cannot hold Jack off for long...

I think Buchanan was the type of granite chinned, stamina machine that would have done really well in Ike Williams deep era, with the chance to fight various contenders multiple times being much greater than the late60s\early 70s.

He'd have won some lost some, but i think it's wrong to say they ALL beat him.

As Lora said, Buchanan would have fit perfectly into the '40s bunch.

l, i did not say every LW of the early 1940s beats Ken Buchanan. But I
would bet that a Beau Jack, Ike Williams, Bob Montgomery, Sammy Angott
[would clutch and outrough ], Willie Joyce, Freddie Dawson, would beat Ken as they, to get to the top of that lightweight "golden age", HAD to fight much stiffer competition than Buchanan had to....

Jack takes Kenny, 9 outta 10, and maybe more...

too much ruggedness here from what I understand and good as Kenny was, he couldn't take that blasting on a constant, as Beau and his troops DID.

Ken Buchanan was an excellent fighter, boxer and tough guy. I met him when he was training in Gil Clancy's gym on 28th street back in the 70's...He held his own vs one of the top 5 ATG lightweights Roberto Duran, only to be fouled so I think he would be competitive...Bea Jack I met back in the late 60's or early 70's when he worked at the shoe-shine concession at the Fountain Blue in Miami I was a youngster...Jack fought in a much deeper era talent wise than Buchanan or Duran at 135 and he fought competitive with the best of that era...This would be a competitive fight or series and I think Jack would come out top but Ken was no slouch in any era

BUchanan's rough era had Ortiz, Laguna, Gato Gonzalez, Mando Ramos, Dejesus and Duran all kicking about.

No doubt the Ike Williams era was deeper top to bottom, but the mid 60s-mid70s period was actually very strong too, with two all-time greats and 3 or 4 borderline great talents.

Unfortunately with boxing the way it was by then we didn't see them all fight each other quite as much as i might have liked, but there were still some real high quality classics in there.
