Great info JC40. I often wonder just how far Charkey would've got on the world stage if he didn't suffer his shoulder injury. He was a good Commonwealth champ and his performance coming back from a big knockdown against Pat Dwyer for a brilliant stoppage to win the Commonwealth title impressed the hell out of me. My suspicion is that he was better than Mattioli who campaigned around that weight at the same time and went on to make a mark at the world level. . His body punching was top shelf and he was as tough as anything. Funny enough my favourite Ramon moment was his in the ring brawl as referee after the Ken Salisbury- Alex Temelkov fight. He threw some rippers in that one lol. This content is protected
Stevie, I LOVED Buchanan...nearly caused a fender bender getting home to see him fight Laguna on tv in 1970!
1970-12-07 : Ken Buchanan 136 lbs beat Donato Paduano 146 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10 Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA Referee: Zach Clayton 8-1 Judge: Jack Gordon 8-2 Judge: Joe Eppy 6-3 "Donato Paduano, Canadian welterweight champion from Montreal, was given some of his own medicine Monday night and went down to his first defeat in 23 fights, losing a unanimous 10 round decision to lightweight champion Ken Buchanan of Scotland in a non-title fight at MSG. Buchanan showed even more speed than Paduano Monday night and also eluded the fast Montrealer with lightning footwork and amazing bobbing and weaving on his way to a lopsided decision." -Canadian Press Unofficial Canadian Press scorecard - 7-3 Buchanan This bout was the semi-final to the Muhammad Ali - Oscar Bonavena main event. Post fight comment "I've never met anyone as fast as him." -Donato Paduano
Hi mate, the word was that Charkey was making more money outside the ring than he was inside it so I always thought that he would have retired anyway. As you said he was one hard fella and he was also huge at the weight. I would have loved to have seen him fight Mattioli. Would have been a barn burner. I thought Russell, RC and a few of the other blokes would dig this pic of Paduano and Ramon meeting up before their fight. It looks like a lightweight standing next to a middleweight. https://media.gettyimages.com/photo...ian-boxer-donato-paduano-picture-id1078937730 Cheers All.
