Carter was not a very popular president, but Buchanan's presidency kept the country careening towards civil war. Pretty clear win for the Georgia boy.
It would be a tough and close fight, but from what I have seen, Carter tended to track and draw his opponents into counter-assaults once they'd committed. Buchanan was, in the main, an out-boxer who ran too tight a ship; controlled the distance too well, and was all too happy to be disciplined and work behind the jab while keeping on the move. He'd have been less likely to fall into that pattern of providing regular opportunities for Carter to score. That said, close-range exchanges would be inevitable as Carter forced the issue to close the distance and create pressure.
