His deterioration was alarmingly fast ! As we've said before,it was no doubt spurred by lack of motivation, following the Norton setback. Just imagine if he'd been given the nod over Ken. A Holmes-Young chessmatch !
I agree and disagree. On one hand, I respect Young's abilities and have already stated earlier in this thread that his illusive style and durability would make him a tough opponent to beat or look impressive against.. On the otherhand, his best perforamances came against guys who were either past it, or ill prepared ie. Foreman, Ali, Norton. Yet he still managed to lose some of those bouts, albeit very close and questionably. A prime Lennox Lewis with an all around blend of size, youth, power and boxing skill would have been a very hard fight for Young to effective in... In fact I can see him running for most of those rounds, which isn't getting him much in the way of points. Mike Tyson had the capability to cut of the ring and break him down on the inside, and Holyfield would have been a tough test as well.. Bowe might have been his best chance for a win, due to his lack of defense and suseptibilty to being outboxed.
Forema and Norton ill prepared and past it, I don't think so. And Lewis isn't any better than Lyle, or Foreman, Young wouldn't run, he'd slip and counter, as usual. Norton would do well except with the punchers, Young could do great if focused. An in shape Young has the tools to beet anybody!
Young could've beaten all of the top names in the 90's. Norton would've eventually gotten stopped. Not his era. I do agree with a post a few pages ago that said Norton may have better in the 80's than Young would but Young would still make people look bad.
It's not like he got dominated. I saw the rematch and I thought it could've gone to either man. I also thought the Dokes fight could've gone to Young. He didn't get dominated in any of those three fights or at least not from the two I've seen.
