I think people tend to underrate him because of his losses to Foreman and Shavers . He did have a great 15 round fight with Holmes after Ken was a bit past it, but I understand those who think his sole skill was to make Ali look bad, I don't agree with it ,but I understand it.
He beat Muhammad Ali three times and only got credit for it once, then beat peak Larry Holmes and didn't get credit for it at all. I don't know about 'underrated' but I'll laugh in the face of anyone who claims 'overrated' because he got sparked by two ATG punchers.
Can't agree with you, it was a great fight but I had Holmes up at least 2 points. I think a younger Norton would have won.
George Foreman said,,,"in his mind Ali never really beat Ken Norton",,, there's a good argument for that. When I watched the rematch I thought Ali had lost. Ali definitely lost the 3rd fight.
To be Alis nemisis over 3 fights for me erases the Foreman mismatch, Ali could not truly get the better of Norton, no other boxer ever had Alis number like Norton did. Norton of course never looked in shape for a bout, no muscular definition.........
Norton lost to Holmes by two points (Kenny gave away too many early rounds to Larry), but he indeed gave him the fight of his life (Larry admits it regularly). Though I thought Ali won that 2nd fight, Norton indubitably won numbers 1 and 3. And looked pretty damn great in the first fight especially. He also beat a prime Jimmy Young, which is a no joke win for anybody. Ken Norton was an ATG, in fact I mentioned in another thread that I had trouble putting him under Patterson on my ATG list.
He is the rare guy that manages to be both. He suffered brutal prime knock-outs, including against one journeyman. On the other hand, you could make the argument that he beat Ali three times, and Holmes. He is a legit pseudo-great.
