Norton is winning, outmuscling Povetkin, having success with that offensive jab until Povetkin lands an uppercut that ices Norton.
Someone who can't fight on the backfoot at all and mid chin vs someone who only fights on the front foot and a has pretty good power gee I wonder how this ends. Yeah Povetkin ices him pretty quickly without too much issue.
Something of a coin-toss. Norton was not a circling, stick-and move king of guy, but he could definitely counterpunch, and his upper-body movement, inside game, and especially crossguard made him difficult to hit clean. People underestimate how tuned-in, well-drilled, and focused Foreman was when he demolished Norton, and how past-it Kenny was when he fought Shavers and especially Cooney. The war with Holmes was the last shade of prime Ken I reckon. He took plenty enough from the likes of Quarry and Garcia, even if both were past it, and the quintessential pressure fighter in Frazier absolutely hated sparring Norton due to his awkwardness and counterpunching. I reckon he shells behind the crossguard throwing leather or fires hooks and right hands from behind that jab of his. Povetkin is dangerous though. Very strong contender with good chin, great power, and fantastic combinations. He might get smothered and outwrestled inside by a more old-school Ken, but he is dangerous all the time nevertheless. One things that's often overlooked when it comes to Norton: he was truly a lethal body puncher. He is recognized as one of the top heavyweights in that regard, but he really was exceptional at times. The shots he snuck around Garcia's guard were sniper-like, and he landed a shot that bend Ali like only Joe Frazier did in the 11th round of their first fight. The high-guard of Povetkin could really get sliced, akin to how Kabayel and Inoue do, bringing the hands up and just decimating the body. Trenches anyway. Can't blame anybody for picking Sasha here.
Povetkin went life and death vs Marco Huck, who was definitely a lesser boxer than Norton. And stylewise Marco Huck looked like taylor-made for Povetkin - pressure fighter, easy to hit, can't fight on a backfoot at all. But he hurt Povetkin badly and was unlucky to not get a win that night.
Huck is the reason I think Norton could be annoying for a while. But Povetkin beats Norton eventually, IMO. Povetkin was a good enough puncher even in his own era, and would likely be even moreso compared to the 70s field. And he's probably a better technical boxer than Norton was, albeit a more conventional one. The early guys said it best. Norton loses whenever Povetkin eventually clips him hard enough. Probably with the uppercut.
I think its time to start mentioning on these threads that the best of Povetkin was PEDs enhanced. I'll take Norton if the rules are well kept.
I wanna say Povetkin, but I REALLY don't want to be seen as a racist... Unfortunate times here on BF.
I really think Norton's cross block defence would get shattered by Povetkin's uppercuts. Povetkin mid rounds KO after being outboxed by Norton.
Are we sure Povetkin was clean in any of his fights? If not, I don't know how we could figure out how a clean version does, since we can't be sure we have film of a clean Povetkin...
