I think Spinks's style of fighting didn't lend itself to career longevity. Moreover, he was caught in between the cruiserweight division-I think making 190 took something out of Leon, because he was always a little sluggish at the weight-and heavyweight, where he was a little undersized. Given those circumstances, he probably did about as well as he possibly could, regardless of his activities outside the ring. That said, he was still good enough to win the second round against Holmes and drag him into a bit of a brawl. Holmes lowered the boom and took him out, but on rewatch, Leon had more moments than I had initially thought. Even if one picks Norton, I think Leon probably finds a way to have some success against him regardless of the final outcome.
I don't think he won the second round .. I think his anything goes aggression pissed off Holmes who crushed him a few minutes later .. I also think Leon had physical skill he did not maximize .. he never trained and lacked discipline .. he was a complete head case (RIP) .. Leon has speed, decent power for his size, incredible stamina naturally and huge heart .. he was too small and did not take a good enough punch for his style to excel at heavyweight in the 80's but could have accomplished much more than he did ..
