Max, in a good matchup. Max was precise and very smart, his precision right would eventually wear on Norton by the late /mid rounds. I see Max winning by ko or decision.
Well i for seemingly one fancy Kenny Norton, I wonder what Max would be thinking seeing this 215lb'ish chiseled adonis coming at him, I dont think ken would perceive Max's right hand to be on the same destructive plain as Foremans or Shavers, this of course could be a big mistake, but certainly Max did not have the bullying intimidatory strength of Foreman, But just maybe Kenny comes closer to the Aggression of Max Bear, and we know how well Mr Bear did in the Battle of the Max's, Max does not bring that Constant Predatory Aggression or that Twinkle Toes Superlative mobile boxing that Overcame Ken on a few occassions...at his Peak. I cant help thinking that Maximilion might get Devalued to Maxahundred at the Hands of a Confident in his Grove Ken Norton... Like Others Ken's Side-On Crab advance might throw Max off as it did others, Ken's Physical Advantages would i believe do him no harm at all in this match, Ken on points or late Stoppage
I don't think Max can afford to stand in front of Ken but I do think Max straight right can get home more often before Norton can establish himself.
Max was a counter puncher, this would allow Norton to get his momentum rolling, difficult to predict. I'll guess that Max gets to him late, lands enough big rights to make Kenny think twice about coming forward and Norton was never effective unless he was going forward.
I think that Schmeling was slightly worse for Norton, than vice versa. Schmeling would look to counter Norton's jab with his right, then go to the body with his left, incrementally breaking him down. If I had to call it, I would say that Schmeling's strategy pays off.
Norton was never able to really separate himself from an elite opponent in the ring. All three Ali fights, Holmes, Young. Schmeling could and would. Late Tko win for Max
I like Kenny in this matchup. He has a better jab, a better left hook, a better right hand (Norton's overhand right is a screamer), a better body puncher and is more physical. I will not, however, discount that counter-right by Schmeling. Max is a thinking fighter and always laying traps. If he springs that counter it could be over, but overall, I would go with Kenny.
Of course it can go either way, but I think you are underselling some of Max's punches. Max might have had the best overhand right in history. He also had a very sneaky body attack with his left, which was often what made the difference. Also, it was his uppercut which put Louis away.
After thinking quite a bit about it Schmeling in a close one, as I think he has the skill and power to handle Norton and is more likely to hurt Norton than Norton is to hurt him. I would favor Schmeling about 7-5
