These men were able to score upsets against the two greatest heavyweights of all time. Who wins in a fight between the two?

Schmeling would probably stop him at some point, though it's possible that it would be a close decision bout. One of my favorite fantasy matchups, both figthers were unorthodox but very smart.

It is tough to decide. Schmeling often fought inconsistently. If Schmeling is at his best, I slightly favour him (otherwise he would lose). His slickness and his abilities as a counter puncher combined with his heavy right hand would probably be to much for Norton's chin.

I wonder if Norton’s crab defense may help him here. Schmeling was able to land consistently on Joe Louis in their first fight because every time Louis through a left jab, he dropped his right guard - a flaw Schmeling saw on film and trained to counter. Is this something that would happen against Norton ? Not sure. Did max have the type of power and physicality to bully Norton and force him to fight off the back foot as George Foreman did ? I don’t know. Furthermore did Joe Louis at the time he fought Schmeling have the experience and stamina of fighting late in deep water as Norton did after facing Muhammad Ali twice ? Probably not.

Norton KO, there is no other out come...............Schmelling aint bullying Norton and will get out pointed and stopped with Futch in Nortons corner..............Schmelling got waxed by telegraph express slow mail cave man Baer, he will get waxed by Norton methodically.......and Norton is leaps and bounds in boxing ability over the way over rated I shid my pants against Joe Louis Baer.

In 3 tries Ali failed to score a "lopsided" decision against Norton. So did prime Holmes. Jimmy Young as well. But little Max is outpointing him with ease (if he doesn't knock him out first)? Highly unlikely, imo!

Yeah, because Schemling fought like Ali, Holmes and Young... well, not really. It's pointless to compare Max to Ali or Young, they had much different styles.

Why do we always look only at Louis fight when we talk about Schmeling? He faced many good fighters and picked them apart in different ways.

Paulino Uzcudun used crossarm guard and Schmeling beat him comfortably.
