Lyle was strange in that he was a very underrated boxer but he got into ungodly wars with fighters like Foreman and Shavers... Guess it depends on what Lyle shows up.
I think that would have been able to intimidate Norton with his power, that is as long as he came into the ring as the go-for -broke, fearless slugger type instead of the more deliberate thinking version of himself that fought Ali. Norton wasn't mobile enough to outbox and confuse him like Young did, and wasn't powerful enough to hurt Lyle either. A knockout in 2 or 3 for Lyle.
There's always been the rap that Norton can't hang with the big bangers but Lyle wasn't the most polished guy and went the route with many mediocre fighters even after coming into his prime. This fight has been discussed often over the years; I'm of the opinion that Norton is just a little more polished and a little more savvy than Ron and takes this one, possibly on a late round stoppage despite being rocked a few times along the way. My $0.02
Its not that Norton cant hang with bangers, although he got sparked a few times, more so that physically imposing guys who could hit and pushed him around tended to intimidate him and therefore had their way with him. I have stated before a big punch alone doesnt get it done against Norton, but Lyle was imposing, an ex con and could hit, factors that i think put Norton into his shell. As for a lack of polish I personally think Lyle was a pretty competant boxer with plenty of power. More polished id suggest than Foreman
Lyle will always be remembered for slugging it out with sluggers, but in the final talley he really didn't do that well against them. He lost to Foreman, Quarry and Cooney. Where non-sluggers are concerned he was TKO'd by Ali and lost two UDs to Jimmy Young. Norton also lost to Foreman, Shavers and Cooney, so they both had the same problem with sluggers. I think Norton takes it UD15. I base that on Norton's three performances against Ali and the WAR he went through with Holmes for the title in which he ultimately lost a split decision.
The Cooney-Norton and the Cooney-Lyle fights shouldn't even figure into this equation...old men reaching for a paycheck...
My money would be on Lyle here. If I was wrong, I would significantly re-evauate Norton vs punchers in fantasy fights.
Norton on points. Prime norton only lost to two punchers in foreman and shavers. Pre prime he was stopped, post prime he was stopped. His chin wasn't that good but not bad enough i'd assume any one with pop beats him.
A lot of people are picking Norton here. He seems to get the benefit of the doubt against punchers somtimes.
