A fight that could and should have happened. Jim Amato has written about it and thinks that Ron would have bested Ken.

Who would have won if both had been in their prime condition.

I tend to agree with Jim Amato. I also think that Ron Lyle had the right tools to defeat Ken Norton.

    What do you think?

Ditto. Norton always tended to come apart once he discovered that an opponent could seriously hurt him. But Lyle's best approach would be to go after him quickly, backing him up, and not try to get cute with his boxing, as Ken was a somewhat underrated stylist. Lyle certainly had the firepower necessary to replicate Foreman's success against Norton, and that's what I'd imagine would transpire.

Lyle by KO. I really liked both fighters, but I'm afraid it would be the same old story with Norton when he faced a big puncher.

Ron Lyle. Unquestionably. This is the reason the fight never happened. Everyone knew- even Kenny.

I always thought it a crime that Norton got more title shots and press coverage than Lyle. Ron would have bested Norton, no doubt in my mind, which is why Ken never fought him.

The common opponent Foreman probably provides the best answer if a shootout occurs.

Lyle got back up and kept on fighting. Norton just bounced around on the canvas.

    Lyle in 3.

I think Norton could win a decision. I wouldn't be suprised to see Norton ending up KO'd but in my opinion, Lyle is a level below Cooney, Foreman and Shavers when it comes to punching power. All his big fights went the distance with the exception of the Shavers fight, who had a glass chin. So did Norton, but Norton had much better skill to go with it.

It should be noted that Foreman thought that Lyle was the hardest hitter he ever shared a ring with including Liston and Cooney.

That may indeed be Foreman's opinion, however Lyle's resume does not support that he was a particularly devastating puncher. Sure he could hit, but most of your better contenders and talented fighters were able to weather the storm and either go the distance or beat him.

I'm not sure who would win, but I'd certainly give a prime Norton a good shot at it.

An interesting one, if Norton doesn't **** himself he's the definite fave here, much much better skills. Lyle may not have the agression to take him out early.

Jerry Quarry was a big puncher.

He's a hard hitter (Lyle) no doubt, but Liston and Cooney both have better single punch power for definite (and more power overall). That said I still think Lyle would have too much for Norton, (stylistically) who always struggled against big punchers.

Ps: Foreman also said he was scared of Frazier yet he destroyed him in a fews rounds, not absolutely everything a fighter says (especially all round compliment giving guy like big George) should be taken as gospel. :good
