Personally I think it was the Shavers fight that truly ruined him. He was looking good here against Randy Stephens post-Larry Holmes fight: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQUsBid3TeQ[/ame]
He could take a decent punch in his prime, but big hitters would always get to him. He tended to go against the ropes which I thought was silly. It worked for Archie Moore but Norton was no Archie Moore. He wasn't too hard to find.
Thats pretty much how he fought the foreman fight. He couldn't have got his tactics any wronger if he tried!
They robbed Ledoux of a TKO victory, why did the ref stop Scott from punching, Kenny was done...Norton loses to any aggressive puncher he fights. Ledoux was not a puncher just aggressive. Quarry was the only puncher than Norton beat but Quarry was more shot than Norton here. Relentless aggressive puncher always beats Norton
Yep. Same old same old in boxing. Just follow the money and you'll find the winner 99% of the time. Going into that bout though, nobody gave Ledoux any kind of chance. The thought was he carried that left hand low and was going to be right in front of Kenny every minute of the fight. Even with a lot of deterioration, it was still as ideal of an opponent you could find. What I still find hard to believe to this day is the amount of folks who really didn't watch the Norton fights from like 77 onwards and thought the guy would turn back the clock to Ali #3 for that Cooney fight. There were a fair amount of folks liking the Norton chances in it. Based on what, I'll never know but the guy did have his supporters. All they had to do was go watch the Zanon/Ledoux/Cobb fights and he would've been in a ton of trouble against not only Cooney but a hitter like Coetzee. Or, boxers like Dokes and Page. Even the guys the next peg down like Trevor Berbick would've been a handful.
Absolutely! That's what I thought back then when I watched that fight on tv and that's what I was thinking this morning while watching that vid. They robbed Scott of a tko win.
That's one of the ironies about Norton. As good a body puncher as he himself was (and plenty of his own downstairs work was on display against LeDoux), and for as impressive a physique as he possessed, he did not take it to the body particularly well himself, certainly not like rivals Young and Ali could soak it up without faltering. A suspect chin is one thing, a suspect body and psyche when confronted with heavy punching on top of that is something much more disturbing.
