I M O , this great warrior should be regarded as one of the all time greats. A fabulous amateur record, rounded off with an Olympic Gold at Bantamweight, McKinney's log was unblemished until he ran into a still young and fresh Vuyani Bungu in '94, losing to the tough African by decision on two occasions, as well as a fantastic tussle against the legend that was Antonio Marco Barrera in the twelfth of a sensational battle for the WBO Super Bantamweight crown in '96, at which point his best days were probably behind him. Without his well documented drink and substance abuse problems, I believe KK could have stayed at the top of the tree for a considerable length of time - I hope he is doing okay for himself now?
Went on a McKinny spree lately actually cracking little fighter. His fight with Jones was great little war. Barrera fight was another. I wouldn't say he was underrated though i never see anyone putting him down
Certainly NOT underrated. RingMagazine fancied him as a p4per which he clearly wasnt. His jab was so-so, his chin average at best, his right side wide open. He was a decent but not great right hand puncher. The most impressive? He ALWAYS kept his poise even under heavy fire, the guy was so cool! I didnt like the Barrera fight very much, Barrera was raw and underestimated him, made it tougher than it should have been. Best McKinney fights were 1. NcitaI, great great fight that Americans didnt see as it was in Italy, 2. the Zavala fight. Rudy Zavala was all-offense pressure with power and a raw talent and McKinney totally took him apart.
Irrespective of how raw Marco Antonio Barrera was in '96, his fight with Kennedy Mckinney was a hell of a fight. It should have won fight of the year honors, in my humble opinion.
he got ****ed by luisito espinosa but his career was already down hill during that time. his fights with jones and barrera were good to watch. hes probably a b fighter at best
McKinney, yes i do agree in many ways he should be mentioned more often as a very capable champion who could have done a lot more than he did.. But due to him and his accomplice Vince Phillips putting that white powder in his nose too much , he hurt his own legacy.. so sad.....
Yeah let's not get carried away, no Duran for sure. Still had great fights with Barrera and Jones. The Jones win was huge, but even though he had just beaten MAB, I think Jones was not responding well to punches, his stamina was shot at that point. Still, KM had one hell of a right hand.
