Hi guys, lately I have been watching some old classics at the gym on my phone when I am running on the treadmill. Today I just watched McKinney - Barrera. What a classic fight that was! The sheer amount of punishment that both men had to absorb is unreal and I am in awe at McKinney's heart in that one, indeed he had to get up from 5 knockdowns. Barrera was a real beast back then although still not the finished article; he had a hard time getting past the jab and the right hand of McKinney probably set the blueprint for Junior Jones.
Just thought I would share my enthusiasm for such a stellar fight.

I am planning to maybe do Spinks - Qawi on Saturday or perhaps a Matthew Saad Muhammed one. :bbb

Glad you finally found a way to see it.

Allow me to let you in on another pair of little men fight worth seeing...

The Michael Carbajal-Chiquita Gonzales war was also savage.

Also, Johnny Tapia-Paulie Ayala. Not as brutal, but the fight was frenetic from start to finish.

Thanks for those good tips. I remember watching the Carbajal- Gonzales one back in the day but I have forgotten the details. I will definitely add these to the list, might also try and educate myself about the hard punching Wilfredo Gomez as I have never seen any of his fights.

Try his war against Lupe Pintor. That's 14 rounds of non-stop punching.

If you want to see his brilliance, basically all of his fights at 122. He seems to have lost some edge by the time he moved up. It also didn't help his cause that Salvador Sanchez is an ATG material when he challenged for a title at 126.

Barrera-McKinney and Gomez-Pintor were two high-water marks in that division's history, surely. Along with Barrera-Morales I, of course. Three of the best fights I've seen.

Oh yeah, and for the smallest pure action you can find, Ricardo Lopez-Rosendo Alvarez 2.

:good lopez took a bull of an opponent and showed his quality by moving when he needed to, fighting when he had and digging deep to take this fight. pure skills versus physicality. this was not the best lopez but probably his best fight

122lbs is where it's at for action fights:

    Barrera-Morales I, the Vazquez-Marquez series, Barrera-McKinney, Sithchatchawal-Monshipour, Gomez-Pintor, Meza-Garza, etc.

This fight was a classic, and classic case of one fighter (McKinney) fighting back as hard as he can even when its clear he's in with a better, stronger, harder hitting opponent (Barrera).

McKinney fought as well as he possibly could that night, and even though it was obvious that Barrera had a serious edge and that he was almost certainly going to win, each round was brilliant. Excellent ebb and flow with jaw dropping exchanges.

    Great fight.

The first Fidel Bassa - Dave McAuley fight (1987, WBA Flyweght) is probably my favourite 'little men' fight.

I liked Kennedy McKinney from the 1988 Olympics.
Very entertaining boxer of the entire tournament.
