Looking back at the Kessler who fought prior to the loss against Calzaghe where he had his major weapon taken from him and was time and time again beaten on the outside, the Kessler since has seemed to change his gameplan to try and be more creative with his offense, this has come at a price, losing the consistency he once had. If we look at fighters like Mundine who Kessler was able to vanquish prior to Calzaghe, we see a guy who is very good at controlling the distance, using the jab from the outside and being if anything, precise with the basics but not adventerous. Looking at him since, in his fights against guys after Calzaghe - the first two fights he had showed a different Kessler, one who tried to get on the inside and bang as he probably felt this is where he troubled Calzaghe in the earlier rounds. He has added more punches to his collection but at the expense of the precision he had with his basics. My view is if he was able to return to the basics he once used so well, got himself back to the condition he had in the Mundine fight - I believe he would not only beat Ward but beat him comfortably. My view is that his jab will nullify the bulk of Ward's weapons and unlike the new Kessler, he wouldn't try to get on the inside to throw those big shots, nullifying the dirty boxing technique Ward uses to rough his opponents up. This is one of the examples where a fighter has potentially damaged his career by trying to become better in areas he felt he was weak in, neglecting to continue doing the things he was world class in. The argument here is that Ward is not a completely different fighter than what Mundine was, I believe they bring similar things to the table, except Ward seems a bit more confident in his own abilities than Mundine, trading a lot more than Mundine ever did at 168.
Ward is alot alot alot more intelligent than Mundane and Kessler too actually. The difference is that I think Kessler's fight tapes Calzaghe and post-Calzaghe exposed some of his flaws. Even the Sartison fight you could see Sartison trying to take advantage of Kessler's inside game and the way he exposes himself for the right to the body when you get close to him. Ward used that repeatedly. Before the Calzaghe fight, Kessler's jab was considered one of the best in the game. After 4 rounds Calzaghe figured that if you get your jab off before Kessler's, you upset the rythym of his jab. Ward used that same pattern in their fight. The blueprint was out there. Before Calzaghe vs Kessler, it would've been a closer fight, one that could go either way imo.
What you and most people dont understand about ward and all real great fighters is that they have multiple styles. Ward can fight on the outside using his speed (miranda). Can fight inside using rough tactics (green), can use both and mix them (kessler) and shows some of the best angles and defense in the process. Kessler has one style, you see the same kessler time in and out. he may be more sloppy than he used to be because the fights are harder for him, age and level of comp. Thats why ward beats kessler.
I won't say I don't think Kessler is a faded fighter, because he's had a lot of wear and tear, but the man operating on vastly superior ring intelligence would get him again. Might be harder for him, but it still happens, I'd say.
Ward isn't as good as people credit him as being. I don't believe he's proven that much in his wins so far except to say that he's a very talented young performer. I don't think he's on the same sort of level as where Kessler was at prior to losing to Calzaghe just yet, I don't think his wins have been as impressive with the exception of a Kessler who looked so out of sorts against Froch, you've really got to wonder what he has left.
This is a joke right... how many fights did Kessler shut out his opponents pre Calzaghe.. His 1 -2 was nasty then but Ward has shown us something that many have not been able to do.. Nutralize an opponent thru great excution of game plan.. attacking weaknesses box inside and out... Great mental focus and nasty mean streak... none of the things I just said you could say about a prime Kessler..
ugh.... you should have named this thread to - "Ode To What Was...." its nice to revel in Mikkel Kessler's lousy boxing history, but dont drag SOG thru it lol jk to keep this wordy ode to the point of simplicity, here it is - 09Ward vs 07Kessler = Technical Decision for Ward (established) 10Ward vs 07Kessler = Unanimous Decision for Ward (Headbutt Conspiracy influenced) 11Ward vs 07Kessler = Rd9 KO for Ward 12Ward vs 07Kessler = Rd7 KO for Ward hrrmmm, as Ward gets more confidence in his ability to control and neutralize, he'll start to commit more power into his punches in the back6, as he's been wanting to as a "fighter"....
I think it stands to reason, Kessler hasn't looked as sharp, precise and measured for a while. He thumped the absolute **** out of a younger, fresher Andrade.. which took Bute 2 goes round to do to an arguably lesser version yet Bute is getting heralded as potentially the best SMW out there.
He's just a Calzaghe nuthugger who's doing his best to talk up Joe's legacy while downplaying Ward. He wrote some garbage about Ward being "overhyped" solely because he's a black American and Calzaghe being disrespected because he's not yesterday. The fact that Ward who was considered to be inexperienced and a non-factor going into the super six beat Kessler by such a wide margin has really made a lot of people, especially Calzaghe fans, become unhinged.
Your post is on point to a tee. A lot Calzaghe fans are so intimidated by Ward's success that its almost laughable, they hate the fact that Kessler got beat so decisively by Ward that they have to say that Kessler is so past it, just to preserve Calzaghe best win as still looking better then what it was.
I dont think Kessler beats Ward he lacks some important traits what I will say is he could be more competititve next time with a better plan Calz proved you up the pressure and tempo you can out work him and he folds Ward just had a strategy and aproach Kessler could not handle Kesssler did get in his jab and right but he could not establish himself enough to win rounds
