I Picked Kessler the first time round. To be fair it was a competetive fight, apart from kessler switching off between 6 and 10! I feel Kessler wasn't himself that night, maybe fighting in front of 50,000 in Wales along with broken hand acompanied by the Palle situation got to him? I think an on-form Kessler would beat Calzaghe in a rematch (it will never happen)

Exactly. The longer Calzaghe sticks around, especially at his age, the greater chance a younger fighter will come along, and do exactly to him, what he did to Chris Eubank all them years ago.

i still pick calzaghe but it could be interesting.

terrific KO out of the blue from kessler tonight but, like i'm telling my workmates who watched the fight with me, he can KO B-Grade fighters all night and he'll still never score a quality world class opponent in the states.

let's get him fighting in the states.

Has Kessler developed a lead right hand? What about a good left hook? Is he a committed body puncher now? Has he gotten any quicker? In my opinion, Kessler cannot make the neccesary adjustments. He's simply not equipped to beat Calzaghe. A technical, jab oriented, orthodox fighter will have a hard time beating Calzaghe.

This is another thing I forgot to mention. It is impossible to say whether these "injuries" are crying over spilt milk after the event.

Say it was true, Kessler is 100% fit this time and gets proper sparring. Another thing to consider.

Well unless you want to call it a straight left that was a damn good left hook tonight ;)

I'm not really basing this on Kessler getting better. I think he is at least back where he was pre-Calzaghe, but with that experience. That must count for something considering he fought in Wales with all those crazy fans.

But also Calzaghe himself not matching that performance again. I find it hard to believe he could fight to that level in 2009.

He still doesn't have the skillset that I mentioned. You need to rough up Calzaghe, make him come to you, and get in that lead straight right. Kessler is not that type of fighter.

Calzaghe simply worked him out, same as he worked out hopkins and unless kessler can learn to adapt and change his style mid fight he dosent beat calzaghe.

Unless joe gets old over night, he beats kessler again :good

Kessler was causing Calzaghe big problems in the 12th, That's the Kessler i'm used to seeing. If he'd been consistant with that performance from the get go it could have been a diffrent story. I'm sure he wouldn't make that mistake again. On the other hand that was Calzaghes best performance to date by a mile. I think Kesslers the only man out there at this weight that could beat him.

Kessler did not reveal it, an English newspaper did. The Danish media kept it a secret because Kessler asked them to because as his trainer said "it would be suicide to let Calzaghe know my man had an injured hand and couldn't spar up to the fight".

The Kessler camp denied it and only after the fight when the endlish media had talken to the hospital where Kessler was getting treated did his camp acknowledge the fact.

Why not? We all saw a what a damn near 44 year old Hopkins did. Let's not forget that Hopkins was Calzaghe's age when he dismantled Trinidad. Calzaghe hasn't been in many wars, and hasn't taken that much punishment throughout his career.

Calzaghe was spent after Kessler. His stamina was tested much further than against Hopkins I felt. I don't think that gets better in 2009, I think there is an opportunity for Kessler to up the pace in rounds 10-12 instead of waiting until the final round. That was a mistake.

I don't think Kessler has to make Calzaghe come to him. Calzaghe did come to him, he mixed it up. But I felt Kessler missed a lot of opportunites on the counter, he just didn't pull the trigger as well as he can. When he did land them they were eye catching, but not enough through the middle rounds. Surely Kessler learnt Calzaghe's rhythm and movements to time him better in a rematch?

If you can't learn things after 12 rounds of boxing something is wrong. Kessler can do a better job, even with Calzaghe's styles advantage, and after all it was only 116-112 at worst.
