It`s a no brainer. Kessler unlike Pavlik is a fully fledged Super Middle with real mental strength. Despite the fact he was away from home and in front of 50,000 hostile fans he put on a strong performance. He is also a far better technician than Pavlik will ever be. Although Hopkins put in a good performance it has to be seen in the light of Pavlik being a choker on the big occasion. He was not really rated by the intelligent and knowledgable posters on here. Kessler would be to much for Hopkins. Thoughts please.
Well I have it 50/50 after Pavlik-Hopkins ... Kessler isn't mentally strong against Calzaghe, but the defeat might changed that - he looked very good yesterday, but Häussler is sure as h*ll no Hopkins I think the fight is pretty unlikely at this point ... Hopkins has far to much to loose and too little to gain from going in there with Kessler. Add to that that Hopkins doewn't want to go down in weight and Kessler doesn't want to go up - he wants to unify SMW ... and you get a very unlikely fight.
I don´t know about that. Hopkins really impressed me in his last fight, but that could maybe be due to Pavliks lack of proper pressure. I´ve always said that Kessler beats Pavlik, but Bernard is a whole different ballgame. Calzaghes moves, use of angles and great footwork made the difference in Cardiff when he faced Kessler, and even though Bernard won´t be able to apply the same amount of pressure, they are both very skillful veterans. I changed my opinion about Bernard, that´s for sure, and he would not be beat easily as he never has been. My heart says Kessler, my brain says a draw:hey
Beranrd wins a close decision. He may be old, but he's too smart for a basic fighter like Kessler, as good as Kessler is with the basics.
Nope. Hopkins is absolutely the worst type of opponent for Kessler. A sneaky fighter who throws you off your rythm and stops you doing what you normaly do best. It'd be simular to the Calzaghe bout. Kessler is great at what he dose but is a mite too predictable imo. He'd do far better than Pavlik though.
Calzaghe:''Who beat Lacy?Who beat Kessler?I'm a champion! Hopkins:''Kessler????That guy ain't even at my level man,I'm a legend,you a champion! Bernard won't take this fight
Several people have already pointed out that Kessler can't promise the cash that the two bigger names can, so Bernard wouldn't be interested in fighting him. If he should so happen to get in the ring with Hopkins. I can't see him claiming a clear-cut victory. He does have better fundamentals than Pavlik and is naturally closer to Bernard's current size. Bernard has good lateral movement and an outstanding defense. He also has a fantastic chin and can make you miss with the best of them. Calzaghe got by Hopkins by purely outworking and pressuring him. Kessler might bring the pressure, but he doesn't bring the punch volume. I see him chasing Hopkins around the ring, and Hopkins counterpunching with quick jabs and sharp straight rights on his way to a fairly close decision. I certainly don't see him clowning and flurrying on Kessler the way he did against Pavlik. Hopkins after the fight said he didn't want to get hit flush by Pavlik, then he sure as hell doesn't want to get hit by Kessler, who makes a habit of stopping SMWs - and who even though Hopkins floored Calzaghe, Joe was never really hurt - but Kessler looked like he tagged Calzaghe stiffly a couple of times in round 7 of their bout and made him think twice.
I disagree. I watched his fight against the German Haussler and Kessler is a good fighter and certainly the best at 168 right now. But, he also makes a lot of mistakes such as dropping the right when he throws the jab and he often leaves himselfs open after he throws his combinations. Bernard is master at xploiting his opponents flaws. Kessler would get countered a lot. Hopkins by UD.
I think Kessler takes this via UD. Although it wouldnt be easy we all saw how Taylors strong jab gave Hopkins fits in their two close fights. And i think Kesslers jab is much better than Taylors and he delivers it much more often. Also Kessler can fight at a very good pace and i think this fight would be all wrong for Hopkins at this stage in his career. Lets not go overboard on Hopkins win over Pavlik. Yes it was a great win but one in which any boxing fan with half a brain could have predicted. In Pavliks rematch with Taylor he wasnt as strong and hard hitting as at 160, Taylor was giving him fits with his movement and Taylor isnt exactly hard to hit. Pavlik is a good fighter but no where near being a great one yet! Just the US looking for another star which isnt there quite at this moment.
