"Kessler has outgrown Mogens Palle" is a very good way of putting it. Kessler has IMO a star quality to him that can easily be carried outside the ring, particularly in the US. With proper marketing behind him and if Kesslers talent really is what his fans makes it out to be, he stand all chances to make a fortune in and outside the ring in the US. Team Palle has next to no experience in getting the most out of it financially. One example of Palle walking in too tight shoes is when he claims he thought it was more than enough when he payed for Kesslers three promotional trips to the US. It's such a ridiculous statement. The danish tabloids talk about Kessler has made about 7mill dollars on boxing and makes it sound as if it is a lot. Compared to what I ask? There is no way of judging whether Palle has done well with Kessler because he is the only promotor in Denmark. Buttom line is that it is time for Kessler to try something new instead of Palle. My advice to Mikkel would be. Avoid legal infighting with Palle. Fullfil your contractal obligations ASAP and move on.
Of course there is a way of "knowing" ... The Calzaghe-fight was recordpaying fight - not only for Kessler, Calzaghe, danish boxing, but for SMW in general!!! - To compare - let's take a real star with the hottest promotor in the world in a fight versus one of the biggest upcoming stars in boxing: Hopkins-Pavlik (with Goldenboy promotions) ... They got about the same as Kessler - put together!!! Kessler would have made no more money anywhere else - with Palle Kessler is THE star ... with a US promotor he'll be one amongst others - proberbly even ranking below quite a few.
I see what you're saying but I don't agree. Look at it this way. Mikkel went to Cardiff with all the record numbers you mention but he lost. Now imagine Palle had succeded in bringing the fight to DK. The way Mikkel lost in Cardiff, it's far more reasonable to assume he might have won with the home advantage, that is, with a home victory Mikkel would have been ready for even bigger fights in the US (at least money wise) against Hopkins and RJJ etc. etc.. Therefore I argue a better promotor than Palle would have brought the Calzaghe fight home and through this ultimately generate more money for Kessler. I believed strongly in Kessler in Cardiff but he was let down by his coaches. Perhaps Palle should have thought about bringing in a guy that is clever in the field of tactics. He didn't.
Sorry mate but this is all wrong... You cannot blame Palle one bit for landing the Calzaghe fight in Wales! The majority of people at this forum, said that Kessler and Palle should take the fight when Frank Warren made the first offer for a fight public, it was around 1/3 of the offer Palle negotiated in the end! He actually offered Warren and Calzaghe a career high payday to come to Copenhagen. By then it was clear that Warren never would let Calzaghe fight Kessler in copenhagen. It had nothing to do with Palle being the promoter. And the matter of the coaches is just plain silly! You can bash Palle for a lot of things... But Kessler and Calzaghe was exellent promoting!
how kessler 'ranks' in his stable is immaterial. it's how he ranks as a financial proposition and a genuine threat to other fighters - based on how much genuine interest there is from the networks and the public - that will get him big fights. because kessler is all palle has that is why palle is mothering him since he lost to calzaghe. if kessler joined golden boy, for example, the popularity and connections that oscar has would make it infinitely easier for kessler to fight an opponent in the US. with palle, it looks like he'll always be on the outside looking in. that's the curse of most european fighters and why we end up listening to this "no-one will fight him", " everyone is ducking him" crap.
i dont agree with that. frank warren is a hard ass about hometown fights the same way palle is but calzaghe was the bigger name at that time. i made plenty of money that night in denmark - where every man and his dog knew kessler was fighting that night - because i said kessler was going to lose that fight. he fought very well but clearly lost. kessler was beaten by the better fighter and bringing in a 'tactitcian' wouldn't have changed anything in my opinion. it's palleøs negative mindset since that fight that is hurting all the hard work kessler has done up until this point. and that's why he needs to take hold of his own career and leave team palle.
The fact that TeamPalle is Mikkel Kessler means that he devotes all his time to Kessler - in goldenboy he will be a meare average fighter ... Look how much Andrade has made - and where he fights... Goldenboy promotions isn't the holy grale! Lets see what deal Palle can negotiate before judging him out ... if he lands a major american name next, then his work has been great - and at least as good as any other promotor could have done. And I agree with Maden 100% - the Calzaghe-fight/purse was brilliant promoting from Palle.
Mikkel Kessler statement on the subject. http://www.mikkelkessler.com/default.asp?language=dk# "I have long been trying to get a meeting set up with "Palle" but it has unfortunately not been possible. I hope we can find a solution, leaving it now for Kroman Reumert to address the problem, because my focus should remain in boxing. I take off anyway on my planned vacation / training camp in Thailand and hope in the meantime my advisers have been "opened" dialogue with "Palle" Mikkel Kessler" (google translate)
You are not convincing me. Please try to follow my logics. The case I'm arguing is based on the believe that the at-home-fighter would win. Then do the calculations that comes with fights landed in case you are the winner, that is, names like Hopkins and R.J.J etc. etc.. Yes, Warrens offer was good, or at least better than what Palle presented. However, when you include numbers from Hopkins and R.J.J fights, the Warren offer looks far less important. Of course, I'm not sure Palle had the clout to outbid Warren but I believe he should have tried harder. Most folks here on ESB believed Kessler had no plan B. So I suppose my statement that coaches let down Mikkel to some extend holds true. Come on! Yes! It was good promotion. But money wise I stilll claim it was more important to land the fight at home, as I argue above.
