Kessler is nothing special at all. He is as one dimensional as any fighter I have ever seen. He had one weapon, one gameplan and he cant adapt for ****. 1,2 1,2. Take away his jab he is nothing. He obviously cant work behind anything else. He was loading up on str8 right hands like an amateur when calzaghe was just hitting with everything but the kitchen sink. Calzaghe fell in like a million times which is usually disaster for a southpaw and when they get knocked the hell out. Kessler is not a great fighter. He is good at his gameplan, take that away he is a fish out of water. Just another good fighter. Anyone saying he is this great fighter is full of ****.
agreed, I love the way at the end of fight he hugged calzaghe and nodded as if to say "yea i got beat"
Hello Guys I'll start by saying that I am no boxing expert. I haven't followed this sport before Kessler got me hooked when he fought Andrade in Copenhagen. Now I find myself becoming a greater and greater fan of this extremely entertaining sport. So respect to all you guys who discovered that years ago. I am danish and of course a big Kessler fan so I thought I would let you in on some of the stuff that's been said in the danish media today, but before that I would like to congratulate Calzaghe for being a true champion with great confidence and great heart. He taught Kessler an important lesson last night and I believe that Kessler will learn from this experience and come out as a greater and better prepared fighter in the future. Now for the media: As for excuses Kessler has been pretty silent but some of the people around him have not. Kessler's hand WAS injured. He did this 3 weeks ago and hasn't sparred since. They knew the fight would be almost impossible since (and I quote) "no man in the world will beat Calzaghe if he hasn't had sparring practice in the 3 weeks leading up to the fight. Only a KO will bring victory". The training of Kessler is under intense criticism. Apparently Kessler has over trained (???) and actually peaked way too early. This caused him to tire very quickly. He himself couldn't believe how tired he was after only 6 rounds. The ring corner team is also being criticized for not treating his eye injury during the fight. They never once treated it. They may never have had to treat him before but they should have been prepared nevertheless. Kessler himself says that Calzaghe was just too good that night and his rights kept hitting him. He was a little annoyed though, of all the punches to the back of the head. Early on the ref kept telling Joe that points would be taken from him if he continued but that never happened. Personally I felt that Calzaghe was on a different level than Kessler last night. He was much faster, better prepared, hard punching and proved that his chin was too tough for Kessler's strategies. I'm sure we have only seen the beginning of his career though, and not the end.
Kessler will be back. He should take a tune up fight, then fight the winner of Pavlik vs Taylor. I think he beats either guy :yep
Should Kessler move up a weightclass? It seems he struggles to keep under 168 and he could very easily bulk up. Maybe the slower pace would fit him too.
I don't know if people realise Pavlik would look like a tooth pick next to Kessler. Pavlik steps into the ring at 168lbs. Kessler steps into the ring at least 12-15 heavier then that.
I hope Kessler bounces back from this loss and become even better. I am not sure I totally believe the danish media though. Those types of reports are very very common after a fighter loses. If I remember clearly, I read somewhere that kessler said just before the fight that he was absolutely well and that he had no unjuries whatsoever. Actually Calzaghe also said for his part (as he was known to have hand problems as well). I remember this because this really made me hyped up for the fight. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/article2781358.ece As to Kessler being overtrained, I can not believe after 39 pro fights that his handlers will commit this types of mistakes. I doubt it. I am sure Kessler being tired after 6 rounds has something to do more with Calzaghe's workrate in the ring than anything.
as someone said, Kessler looked very one dimensional. All his did all night, except for a few nice uppercuts, was throw one two's looking for the big right hand to land. It did a few times, but JC apparently has a pretty good chin and once he took those punches, the fight was over. Kessler did nothing to change his gameplan at all, it just looked like he thought his sheer power would do the job if he kept unloading straight right hands. It did not.
Ah, the typical "I won't really give the guy who just beat my ass full credit" line. What Kessler should be saying is "I lost the fight in large part due to my weaknesses as a fighter, which include my stiff robotic fighting style and predictability, and less due to my bad back or rumoured hand injury." :nod
Well the hand thing seems confirmed by now. Kessler himself has now commented on it and says that there was no way he would admit to it before the fight. It would be insane cause the fight would be cancelled and there was no way he would miss this opportunity. He is in no way crying about it though he just confirms now that it was true. About the tiredness I can't comment cause I don't know what "over train" means. Kessler says that normally right before a fight he can't wait to get up there and box and is ready to explode. This means his body is 100% ready. According to him this stage came way too early this time and when they reached fight night the only thing on his mind was getting the fight done so he could relaxe. Something he had never done before a fight.
Well this is what the rumours from Kessler's camp before the fight were all about. Losing 2 weeks of sparring, etc. If true he should have simply pulled out of the fight. It's his own/his team's fault for going through with it if Kessler was less than 100%. Even Frank Warren mentioned at the press conference that Kessler would be a fool to "face Calzaghe with just one hand".
Well I guess that dreams sometimes screws with your logic. This match has been Kessler's ultimate dream for more than a few years now and he says that if he had pulled out someone else would have stepped in and he would have missed his opportunity altogether. Anyway he has confirmed the injury and the missing sparring himself now.
