    What do you think?

A lot's been said about Calzaghe and his resume, but is Trinidad really as good a MW as Kessler is a SMW? I think that Calzaghe has fought the best fighter that either of them has ever taken on, and won.

Furthermore, when he beats Hopkins, Calzaghe will have two wins better than any of Hopkins' and furthermore, Hopkins will have lost to the two best fighers he's ever faced.

So who is the better man in legacy terms, really?

Jones is a better fighter than anyone either fought or can fight, but such was a competitive loss, which is a credit to Hopkins.

In terms of victories, he has no victories that are more meaningful than the win over Kessler, but he does have more good wins in abundance and such counts for consistency and overall value.

I've always contested that because Calzaghe's comp isn't far behind overall and that he's undefeated, that he's on par with Hopkins' resume.

A victory over him at this point means only a little, but several other good LHW victories, such as Woods, Dawson and the like, easily jump Calzaghe way over Hopkins and history will reflect it.

I also think that Calzaghe is the better overall fighter and superior H2H against the MW-LHW crop of now and historically.

Hopkins has the better names that the boxing public could identify with, Calzaghe really doesnt, the only 2 good fighters Calzaghe ever fought was Eubanks and Kessler, for 10 + year reign, thats pretty sad dont you think?

Agreed. But i'm interested in signiture wins here. Overall, people aren't particualrly interested in Ali's (Excellent) level of general comp when slotting him in at #1 - it's Liston, Frazier, Foreman, the signature wins.

Hopkins' signature wins are over WW's at MW - though the Wright win may mature, i'm not sure - whereas Calzaghe's signature wins are over Kessler and, probably, Hopkins himself - a living legend who is currently winning, and as such, a serious scalp in my view.

Eubank, a natural MW, is still a superior win than most* of Hopkins MW wins, Kessler, a fantastic natural SMW in his prime, is certainly better than any of Hopkins single wins.

But your statement of Hopkins having more wins in abundance is valid, which it counts for much.

It's worth noting that both guys have outclassed their best wins also and the majority of scorecards in their general solid wins were very, very wide.

Fair enough, a win over Hopkins would do wonders for Calzaghes resume, but a loss would be catastrophic IMO.

But smaller by a much lower margin. Welterweights are MUCH smaller than big MW's.

The jump for a good sized MW to SMW, is not a big deal. Tito and DLH we're very small at MW.

In time, Calzaghe's win over Kessler will look all the more impressive.

Without any doubt. Kessler is better than anyone Hopkins has fought, with the exception of Jones. The only really close fight I could see being close is Winky/Kessler, but at 170lbs, Winky wouldn't carry the weight well for that fight, either. At 160lbs, Winky/Kessler is close, just like Winky/Hokins would have been.

I'd also pick Kessler to do a number on Hopkins at this stage.

Damn Kessler is being over-rated because he fought a close fight with Calzaghe....

Calzaghe has had a fair few fights that have been close yet the opponents turned out to be average, I suspect that will be the case with Kessler. Sure he might win a strap at 168 now Calzaghe is moving up but that is one **** division.

The only thing that makes the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight interesting is Hopkins age.
