That's my prediction. After watching some of these fights, I believe that Kessler is the right combination of defense and caution that will give Calzaghe fits. Unlike other opponents Calzaghe has turned back, Kessler has little defensive skills of stepping back consistently, but stepping to a jab or right hand with every inch he gives up. For a guy like Calzaghe who comes in with little flurries he's gonna be eating alot of jabs and right hand counters. Calzaghe will no doubt lead, but Kessler is going to set traps for him. Don't be surprised to see Calzaghe knocked down by a right hand sometime over the 12 rounds. Or maybe even TKO'd.
It's possible... Kessler's ability to create and control distance is excellent. And his shotgun jab could make it very hard to get inside on him. He is very good defensively as well and uses every inch of the ring to his advantage. But I still like Calzaghe by UD
Damn, I am really into a BIG TIME headache predicting this one and all you guys with late time injury gossips and all opinions ranging from Kessler's one punch KO to Calzaghe's TKO by a barrage are not making it any better. I think Kessler is very good, that patiently aggressive to make Joe extremelly cautious and thusly, steal his advantage of putting them together and fast. I understand that Kessler can step back and punch which makes it extremelly difficult to penetrate efficiently. And like you wisely pointed out, it can come to the point of Mikkel scoring more on defense than Joe on offense but not if Joe's offense is better than Mikkel's defense, and where is Mikkel's offense in all this?... Happens that even if there's certainly the chance of Joe walking into a big punch and then, if not virtually out of his feet, maybe tryin to clear his head into the rest of the fight, this guy is really that good to out-think Mikkel and beat him still... I feel no affection for the Prince of Wales, but I still say that to risk your (virtual) money on Kessler is very wild, maybe the wildest think to do under the various circumstances that play against the Viking Warrior.
As sean always insists: everyone who predicts a onesided victory for one or the other is deluded, if they both fight according to form. It's easy to see Kessler as this superman who blows away everyone in sight with his missile-like jabs...it is also easy to see Calzaghe as this fighter who flies around you and flurries from all angles at the same time...but in truth, JC will be able to avoid that great jab quite a bit and MK will be able to push Joe when he tries to flurry quite a bit...they will both be brilliant and it won't be onesided.
I can see him winning a UD easier than some expect. The thing is Calzaghe likes flurries. That's how he controls the fight by exploding with more than one punch. The way I see it becomes a timing game. You can't depend on flurries when your opponent is steady block, evade, punch. Block, evade, punch. You might get one in when he's doing this but he's gonna nail you eventually with some solid shots because you are moving forward. All he has to do is be ready to evade that first punch, and come behind it with a jab and if you are still there, a right hand. Worse yet you will likely walk right into the punch. Now it'd be one thing if Kessler had no power. Calzaghe could simply walk through those 1-2s and throw his flurries with abandon, wearing Kessler down. Not so in this case. He has a guy in front of him that CAN knock him out if he lands clean. And that ultimately favors the boxer over the swarmer.
As always(almost) good analysis. I am fairly certain that Kessler has the intangibles to negate most of the offence of Calzaghe, with counters, movement, jab. Enough to stop Calzaghe in his tracks very often. However, Calzaghes style is all about the offence - you take most of the sting away - his style will simply crumble. His defence is almost nonexisitant, since his brilliant plan has always been "Offence is the best defence". Now, Kessler hits hard, and accurately(he does lack killer instinct, because he doesn't take unnecessary risks), and JC has been wide open before; ie vs Brewer and Mitchell, and got decked vs the latter. However, JC is a supreme fighter - and will not give up even when hurt - very strong willed. Mitchell and others have made the error of standing and trading with him - if Kessler does this also, he could very well go down, or lose rounds - but I am pretty sure Kessler doesn't, because that has never been part of how he fights - no matter how superior he has been.
You can't pick fights for **** anyway, so I am content with you picking Kessler just like I am content with Teddy Atlas picking Kessler.:yep
Quite correct Amsterdam. It's boxings biggest myth that old timers were better than modern fighters. The fans who believe such nonsense are the pugilistic equivilent of the Flat Earth Society
As long as Calzaghe doesn't win by bull**** TKO stoppage this will be a great fight. I'd hate to see him get robbed of the biggest victory of his career by his own hometown ref atsch
Our guy Calzaghe is going to impress all this weekend. Then I do hope you continue your anti-Hopkins crusade.:yep
GOD Hopkins must be THE most overrated fighter in history. Some twats even think he'd have beaten Hagleratsch Hopkins is the boxing equivilent of The Emperor's New Clothes!! Everyone can see he's shite but hardly anyone dares say anything lest they be considered a heretic!!!!
Everyday Im getting more and more confident that you will be embarassed on the fourth of nov. You are a future Ottke lover. Ive spoken to God and he said you are doomed to this relentless destiny. Sorry.
I just interviewed Cristian and he mentioned nothing of it. Kessler is doomed, you lying high line car driving, economically secure Denmark resident.
