:good fantastic news, by the end of the year or early next we could finally have an undisputed Super Middleweight champion
I just Googled the WBOs rankings and DeGale was number 3 before the loss for Groves. ****ing hell......
from BLH Mikkel Kessler Approved as WBO Mandatory Denmark's Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33 KO) is back in the hunt for a major title, as the WBO has approved Sauerland Event's request to name the 32-year-old as the mandatory challenger to current super middleweight beltholder Robert Stieglitz (40-2, 23 KO). This seems another obvious step in Sauerland's plan to get a belt on Kessler as quickly as possible, and maybe after that, target the desired fight with Lucian Bute. You can't really blame Sauerland or Kessler for this, I guess. Being "WBO champion" would give them more leverage in negotiations with Bute, the IBF trinket carrier, and word came out of the Kessler camp that they were unhappy with initial offers to go to Montreal to fight Bute. I don't think it's the going to Montreal that they're worried about as much as a money split, and "champion vs champion" gives them better ground to stand on when trying to cut an even deal with Bute and Interbox. And Stieglitz vs Kessler isn't that bad of a fight itself -- they're both top ten guys in the division, and I think Stieglitz is a bit better than he often gets credit for, too.
Would of preferred to see Bute fight because i want him to fight someone of note with no more excuses. But in a way this tightens the division and means the best guys hold belts (tempting fate a bit). Kessler may feel it's smarter to have one more fight before taking Bute. Who knows..
yeah imo Kessler could do with one more tune up fight and as you say it tightens the division up and gets all the belts closer together. After Stieglitz and should he win, I have no doubts Kessler will then target Bute.
Kessler is not the force he once was but should still be able to mix it with everyone apart from Ward & Dirrell. Would love to see him rip Stieglitz apart and smash Bute to smithereens.
in other words "we wanna win a world title as easily as possible by taking on the worst champion and avoiding Froch/Ward and Bute"
Kelseer can beat Ward and Dirrell. Get the rematch on with Ward after the super six. Kelseer is the best Super Middleweight in the World.
As HMS says it gives Kessler a better bargaining position for the Bute fight and other options if that fight falls though.
:deal Come on guys, call me a cynic but did people really expect Kessler to duck out of the super six then just fight the best in the division straight away anyway? I've no doubt Mikkel will fight another top name before he's done but it's clear his management have decided to earn a bit more out of him before they let him get taken apart by Ward (or someone else next time) again.
probably. still i don't really see why your getting excited about it. kessler vs a belt holder. Bute will fight Pavlik now btw.
