Let me take you guys through a few issues from the last couple of days regarding the upcoming fight between WBA SMW champion Mikkel Kessler and Danilo Haussler of Germany.

    1: Purserumblings.
Haussler's promoter Sauerland won the pursebid ($1.14 mill) to stage the fight. There have been several rumours in the danish press that the contract wasn't yet signed. It turnes out that Kessler's manager Bettina Palle signed the contract yesterday and returned it to Sauerland. But Palle had edited the contract regarding Kessler's purse so that it was a net purse rather than gross.

Of course Sauerland is discontent and says that according to German rules, Kessler must pay tax (21%) of the purse. Palle on the other hand says that the purse is net which is in accordance with WBA and EBU rules. Mogens Palle today flew to the dominican republic to meet with the executives of the WBA.

Sauerland threatens to withdraw his pursebid if the purse is not gross.

It's no small amount of cash we're talking about. It's around $250K.

    2: Trainingmysteries.
Kessler's trainer wrote on his blog something like this: All of you who thinks that Kessler isn't working out is invited to come to my gym and se at sep. 25 at 6 o'clock.

So a public work-out was scheduled. Later the same day it was cancelled for no reason given!

Yesterday however Ross Thompson was flown in from the US so the sparring should be ok now (better late than never). Thompson is around 15 pounds heavier than Kessler.

    3: Sparringvid.
Here's a sparringvid and interview from danish tabloid Ekstrabladet:

Is Haussler any good? I see that he's not much of a puncher, and hasn't been too active as of late.

Then again, boxrec can only show you so much. Any chance he'll give Kessler a tough fight?

What? I never heard, that you will get paid a net-purse according to WBA's rules...

Haussler isn't any good. Very poor defense. He'll eat Kessler's jab all night I think. But he's a tough cookie and this is his big chance.

No question about he'll come in in tip-top shape and he'll have homefieldadvantage. Another thing is that Kessler likely underestimates the guy. Haussler has been soundly ridiculed by the Palles and the danish press which is something Kessler must know. He might also look ahead towards some bigger assignments in the US next.

No trainingplan scheduled untill recently. No US camp as he's used to.

Sparring only just started so Kessler will not have his usual 120+ sparringrounds.

So the only intriguing thing here is how well Kessler is prepared. The Kessler who fought Andrade would destroy Haussler inside 5 rounds IMO.

Yep, he's quickly becoming 'yesterday's fighter', the guy nobody in the US knows about, other than that he challenged Calzaghe and lost. And he's not a young guy, by boxing standards. He needs to demolish Haussler and get a real fight signed immediately.

According to Palle that's the standard procedure. Of course Sauerland has another opinion.

Dane Rudy Markussen's purse when he fought Danilo Haussler was net.

Maybe Kessler doesn't give a sh!t. But his management does. Palle is known for shall we say oddly obsessive behavior.

Kessler has said that he'll fight in the US next (if he can find a dancingpartner that is).

Before the Haussler fight was agreed, Team Kessler sought out several US options including Pavlik, RJJ and Vargas (true story). None of them wanted to have a go so it's really about what kind of options that you have.

Ok, I informed myself about the situation and the WBA rules say the following:

15.7...a) Amount of the Bidding. The purse shall be NET after deducting the corresponding taxes applicable in the nation where the bout is held, and without any further deduction of any kind except for the sanction rates which both champion and challenger must pay, under the previsions hereof, and such deductions will be made by the promoter at a later date, when he pays for their purses."...

So Palle is right about it - sounds like a mistake by one of SE's people...

Whom do you think Mikkel could fight in the US next, BatTheMan?

Do you think Pavlik would fight Mikkel if he lost to Hopkins/won against Hopkins? How about Taylor, if he beat Lacy? Anyone else comes to mind? RJJ, if he lost to Calzaghe? Hopkins if he lost to Pavlik? Any clues?

    Thank you. Nice find.

I find that a bit difficult to interpret actually. Does it mean that the bid is net at once or net after taxes has been deducted?

It means that the bid you are delivering must be NET -AFTER- ...otherwise it would say NET -BEFORE-...
