That's just what I was thinking. If both fighters can rack up another win or two, esp in dramatic fashion, before their inevitable showdown, the overall purse should be significantly higher.

Folks also need to realize that, given the state of thing in the pro boxing management & legal systems, a 3 mil payday might result in VERY little actually going to Kessler.

This guy is trying to stay relevent ... if he fights Bute right now he has one big fight left in him. That's why I believe he dropped out of the super six ... If he avoids Bute right now and let him fight the winner of the super six ... that gives Kessler a chance to pick up a title and possibly rematch Froch or fight Dirrell.

I like Kessler a lot and I saw him fight live against Calzaghe. But people need to admit that he turned down the fight (for now) after talking it up for the past few months. Don't blame Bute that Kessler wants to fight a lesser fighter first.

This is where we are.

Kessler (for many years): "Come to Copenhagen and I'll pay you 3 mill. We can also fight in Canada and then you pay me 5 mill".

Bute (for many years): "One day yes, but I am not ready yet".

Bute (recently): "You're now injured and have not fought for a long time... NOW I'm ready! But I still want it in Canada though... come and I'll pay you 3 mill".

Kessler replies: "My one eye has healed and the other one is much better. I didn't look as rusty as I could have, but right now is now the time for me to go to Canada for 3 mill. You come to Copenhagen for 3 mill and we can talk". Until we hear back we will be working on other option - most notoriously Stieglitz who German just like Sauerland, and with Mikkel living and training in Germany for many years this is very interesting.

Bute: "Hmm... he did look better than anticipated despite the injury and long lay-off... I would still fight Kessler on my terms in Canada, but I wont go to Copenhagen for 3 mill. I will pursue a fight with Pavlik, because he will be easier to lure to Canada because he really doesn't have many options.

$3 million is less than he makes to fight scrubs in Denmark. He made 2.5 million Euro for each of his fights in the Super Six, and got half of those at home. It's not an unreasonably low offer, and it's probably a decent starting offer if Sauerland had any interest in negotiating, but it's certainly not an offer he should have accepted.

 

I'm not prepared to say Kessler is ducking Bute. Avoiding other fighters never seemed liked Kessler's style, and there is a lot more than a monetary guarantee involved in analyzing a fight contract.
