Kessler representative claims Kessler was hampered by damaged hand vs Calzaghe!

    This month's Boxing Monthly quotes Kessler's former US representative Michael Marley as saying:



    "...I know for a fact - and let me preface this so it doesn't sound totally absurd - he may not have beaten Joe Calzaghe with two good hands, but the fact of the matter is his right hand was virtually broken.

    Wearing my publicity hat, we had a media visit at a country club in Wales about five days before the fight and these guys naturally needed videos and photos of Kessler doing something, and basically I had him hit the heavy bag three times. There was a reason for that - he was protecting his right hand.

    It would have been professional hari-kari for everyone involved had he pulled out, but he was still competitive..."



    Has anyone heard of this supposed injury before, or do you think it's just lies?

    Man this is ANCIENT history. Kessler had surgery immediately after the fight. I'm not saying he would have won, but I'm certain it would have been a lot closer fight.

    I must've taken my eye off the ball in the aftermath then mate. I didn't know Kessler had fought injured.

    By that logic, Calzaghe's broken hands for every fight - Joe would have won ALL of his fights much more impressively ?

    Im one of the biggest MK fans on here, and I can only say he's got himself to blame. He disregarded the hand injury just before the fight, so he's only got himself to blame.

    Old news.It was heard of before the fight.

    Calzaghe had numerous hand injuries himself.

    It is what it is.

    Weeks before the fight rumours had it Kessler wasn't getting his sparring in because of a hand injury. Kessler himself said he did not know where those reports came from and that they were false a week before the fight or so.. and he made it sure he's absolutely fine and fit to fight.

    Now, we all know he had surgery done on the hand immediately after the bout, but as for anyone using that as an excuse for him losing.. I would say is highly uncalled for. We all know Calzaghe has suffered major hand problems and dug through the trenches, winning bouts with virtually both hands broken.

    Most people thought Kessler's camp was just making excuses. I criticized Kessler heavily. I think I invented the term "Robo-Dane," and I repeatedly stated that Kessler looked like the proverbial "deer in the headlights" for much of the fight. However, when MK had surgery immediately after the fight, I changed my tone. Kessler's style revolves around that big right hand to a very large extent. Take that away, and of course he wasn't at his best.

    Interesting. I haven't watched that fight in a long time, did you see that Kessler threw the right hand less or with less venom in the Calzaghe fight? Or did it not seem to impact on him during the fight?

    It can't have been that bad.

    After all, the man himself has denied it publicly...... and some of those uppercuts looked tasty in the second and fourth rounds.

    Yes, but you'd have to ask: just who was Joe fighting when his hands were damaged during fights? He never fought anyone near his own level before he faced MK, so his task would have been a lot less daunting than Kessler's, if indeed this story of Kessler's injury is true, which we don't really know that it is.
