Here's what gets me about Kessler/Palle: 1) Kessler has said repeatedly that he wants to rematch Calzaghe. He also has acknolwedged that he is unlikely to be given that fight. Well, if he's serious, the only way for him to warrant a rematch is to dominate Dawson on HBO. That would remove the guy everyone wants Calzaghe to fight and make Kessler again the No. 1 threat to Joe. 2) HBO very much wants to broadcast another Kessler fight. Given the brutal ratings for Calzaghe/Kessler, Palle should consider himself very fortunate this is the case. You don't turn down a fight without offering up an alternative. It's fine not to want Dawson, but you'd better at least have someone in mind to interest the network. 3) Palle's excuse for not fighting Dawson is a lie. Dawson is a small LHW and, in fact, might be best at 168. It's absurd to suggest that he's a cruiser. AverageJoe's reasoning for Kessler sticking at 168 makes more sense than what Palle himself said. 4) And if Kessler has all these great fights at 168, why the **** didn't he take on someone with a pulse in 2008?
That fight was signed and ready to go, then Diaconu pulled out. Meanwhile Team Kessler came out and said they are not interested in a fight with Dawson.
Taylor is fighting on HBO on Saturday. They always profile fighters that have upcoming fights. Check back next week, there won't be anything about him there.
Far too early for this fight... Dawson is hardly a name in the US - and neither is Kessler = small money and not much reputation gain. Risk/reward nightmare - especally for Kessler. KOing Dawson will earn him as much fame as Calzaghe's beating of Lacy - who is now considered nothing - and hence Calzaghe's victory was nothing. We'd see the same the day after the fight if Dawson got KO'd - nothing but a overhyped glasjaw and so on... same goes for a Dawson victory - nothing but a overprotected eurobum etc... Let them prove their merites first - make the fight acually mater! The LHW division is about to retire - that will make Dawson the likely king ... in SMW Kessler is also looking to be the likely king ... let them claim their thrones before throwing them in the same ring... There are plenty of more relevant fights to be made for both fighters... As for the palle reason - totally agree - it's BS
take a look at his record ... so far it has been all mouth ... only one real name on the record (Adamek) and he was in trouble versus old man Johnson... and defended against Ruiz and Mendoza - hell even Kessler's comeback opponent Sartison is better than those - and it's Kessler being acused of being the overprotected eurobum... tsk tsk!
Yeah, that's because Showtime owns the footage to most of Lacy's fights. Therefore, HBO would be hard pressed to have Lacy's greatest hits with hardly any footage available for usage. Yes.
Calzaghe was immediately signed to HBO once he beat Lacy, and has gotten 3 big money fights from HBO. So Kessler could greatly improve his notoriety and his bank account by beating Dawson.
Kessler made more money fighting Calzaghe than Calzaghe had made on all his HBO-fights put together ... Kessler made about the same as Calzaghe did in his defenses versus Häussler in Germany. Palle is the promotor/manager - he wants to make the fights that pay the most and risks the least ... he has plenty of better options - both in the short and long run. A Dawson-fight (win) wouldn't do anything for Kessler that a Taylor-fight (win) wouldn't do - actually I think a Taylorfight would be a bit better. Hopkins is also in play - here the reward is even bigger. Ontop of that there is a few euro-fights that would be good too (Froch, Inkin and Larsen) and then there is Bute... Hence you didn't have to be a furtuneteller to forsee Palle's answer to the HBO on that fight...
How is this even possible when Calzaghe made more money than Kessler in that fight? Let's not forgot that Calzaghe made about the same against Hopkins and almost twice as much against Roy. Taylor has fallen out with boxing fans for the past few years now. He's also lost his last two fights. A win over Dawson definately does more for Kessler than a win over a Taylor who just entered the divison and has been mediocre for the past few years. Of course you don't. And the reason for that is because Dawson is a tough matchup for Kessler, and Kessler stands a good chance at losing that fight.
Kessler made more than Calzaghe - Calzaghe had to pay for hometown advantage... As for the pay-comparison - I ment for Calzaghe's fight from Lacy to Kessler. I don't know how much Calzaghe got versus Hopkins and Roy. But I know that Kessler got about the same versus Calzaghe as Hopkins and Pavlik got when they fought eachother (combined)
With hardcore fans mayby - but the mainstream doesn't know Dawson better ... As for Dawson posing a risk for Kessler - sure - but Kessler/Palle has taken those before - mainly Mundine and Calzaghe - both away. The difference is the reward was much much better than what's being offered in a Dawson-fight. Combined with better or at least as good options.
