Exactly. Kessler fought bravely against Calzaghe 12 months ago and has done nothing but **** away his 2008. At his physical peak, he certainly needs to adopt a more aggressive approach in matchmaking. Just as was the case in the leadup to the Calzaghe/Kessler fight, Palle seems not to understand the importance of television. People forget that without HBO, JC/MK doesn't happen. So if HBO says jump, then by God if you want to get paid you'd better jump. As you say, the European alternatives aren't that interesting. I think Kessler is an excellent fighter and that he might defeat Dawson, as it's a difficult matchup for Chad. Too bad we don't get to find out.
Simply put: it's time for Kessler to leave Team Palle and sign up with Golden Boy... you won't have many chances if you keep turning down HBO. To Team Palle's credit, if they feel Kessler shouldn't fight at 175, but still interested in risky fights at 168 together with HBO, they should do that. But this is really a superfight, no reason to turn down... Kessler is not in Calzaghe's position to either go out or find a superfight. For Mikkel's future, they should take the risk.
I dont get this sh.. why turn down a good fight, against a man who is stylewise easier then a Hopkins or Calzaghe II fight ? I dont buy the weight issue, money maybe...or they better have a wery good explanation!! Only Hopkins, Calzaghe, Taylor or a big unification/money fight against Bute or Froch can make a little up for this... Both Palle and Kessler has stated that he wont fight Larsen, unless Larsen got a belt.
That is nothing new. Only boxing newbs didnt know this. Honestly I have said this for a long time... how hard can it be to understand? Kessler has said for almost 10 years that his dream was to attempt to unify and dominate a division before moving anywhere. Just like Hopkins did, just like Joe did etc. Taylor for example has had far more exposure than Dawson and is far more proven and has a better resume than Dawson. He is also same height and has longer reach than Kessler. Why should Kessler even consider moving up to fight Dawson now? It doesn't make any sense. If it is because people are annoyed that he is so good, then why don't we match him up with Vitaly or 6'3" David Haye? Like I said: Only newbs didnt know that this has been Kessler's dream for a decade and he is of course not chanbging that for some new upcoming fighter like Dawson. atsch
I think Kessler is a top fighter as well. His run of fights with Mundine, Beyer, Andrade, and JC was an impressive run. Its been the last year that has been a big step backward. Now he might start 09 the same. Kessler is starting to waste his prime years.
I dont understand Palle's motives, Kess has the beating of Dawson imo at any weight. If any fight is going to enhance Kesslers name, its a win over Dawson. The only reason i can think of is - 168 is Mikkels division, so if a fight would happen, 175 would prob be a one off, meaning if Kessler was to go up and fight for the IBF, he would be stripped of his current WBA belt at 68. After beating Dawson coming back down and getting a title shot might be difficult if the belts have been swallowed up by other guys who dont wanna fight him... still alot of ifs! Palle is an idiot. I think signing with Golden Boy is the next thing for Kess to do...
Dawson is neither new or upcoming. He is a solidified champ. He has wins over several top fighters. He has the backing of both the big networks. Dawson is a big fight and Kessler simply doesn't want to face him.
Dawson is an averaged-weight (though very tall) LHW. His team have said he is going to move up to 200 lbs and maybe even Heavyweight eventually. For now, I think he could boil down to 172 or even 168-170 to make this fight. Too bad Kessler doesn't want to know.
At least Pavlik had the balls to try it. And Pavlik stepped up 2 weight classes Kessler is only asked to step up 1. Also Pavlik didn't have to fight Hopkins he is young and has all the time in the world to make a career. Kessler on the other hand is about to turn 30 and has what 40 fights??? The clock is running out on him.
I can see the motivation in aiming for Jermain Taylor...but there is no guarentee Taylor would choose Kess anyway, he could call for Bute, Inkin, Froch/Pascal, they would all offer Jermain a shot and all are easier fights than Mikkel Kessler... If a Kessler - Taylor fight is secured ill let him off, but if Dawson was a real possibility I think Palle is dropped the ball!
