It was at fitness first at Bondi Junction, i met kessler there and watched the session, Kessler was taking it very easy, you could see the pain he was in when his trainer was trying to loosen his back up with stretches.

A nice little story about Sam and the legendary Tony Madigan.

Out the front of Melbourne Hilton Hotel, having just met Tony Madigan and his son, and having a cigarette (can't believe ya can't smoke inside the Hilton!!), I felt very fortunate to share a few minutes chatting with Tony. Asking some questions about his career and seeking opinions on different Aussie fighters from his era, Sammy Soliman waltzed on up to say hello.

Introducing the two parties was a second pleasure, as neither seemed familiar with the other. I mentioned (under my breath to Sam) that Madigan had represented Australia in 3 Olympic and 3 Commonwealth games. The need to mention the 2 encounters with young Lightheavy Cassius Clay was a surety. Suffice to say Sam was impressed.

I ushered my fat arse into the Hotel momentarily.. upon return, Sam and Madigan were chatting away freely.. Sam mentioned under his own breath "I can't believe he faught Ali twice".. He really was impressed.

Madigan asked Sam of his own career.. Sam mentioned the many titles he'd won.. Australian and Commonwealth.. He then mentioned the Oz Cruiserweight title victory. Madigan appeared shocked as Sam's still a fit M/W.. "Yeah, I gave away 10 kilo in that fight"!!!!!!!

Madigans jaw dropped.. Seriously!! His 81 year old eyes lit up, and every ounce of those 81 years looked hard at Sam.. "You gave away 10 KILO in a fight????"

Bloody brilliant. Hard to tell who was the more impressed with the other at that point. Kicking myself now.. should have taken a photo of the pair together.

Anything happen between Soliman II and Soliman III?

    Let's have a think now.

You seem to be making a real big deal about something - so it must be of genuine world title, best in the world type significance - the hint seems to be that the relevant weight division is super middleweight?

    Got it!

Can only be Joe Calzaghe retaining his WBA super world, WBC & WBO super middleweight titles against Mikkel Kessler (3rd Nov 2007).

There was a big difference between Mundine/Soliman 2 and Mundine for the 3rd fight.

Im not going to give you the answer cause i think you will work it out eventually and it relates to other discussions we have had in the past :p

Very interesting, is this a rumor or its true? It takes it out of you spending time in thailand then going straight into a fight when you return from Australia, he would need a couple of weeks to adjust again and usually the guys who do go to thailand for training dont go anywhere near Pattaya, Katsidis for example trains in Chalong, away from all the night clubs. Pattaya's a pretty seedy place to be training in.

Mundine carried Soliman on the 3rd fight imo, he was given a bit of flak for fighting Sam again after knocking him out in the manner in which he did, unfortunatly Mandy had no choice as Sams manager initiated the rematch clause on the contract in order to Milk the cow for all it was worth, the only thing i didnt see or hear was Mandy saying Mooooooooo!

Good tale. Sam is a great guy to get chatting too. Not to hi jack the thread but two little sam moments for me...

After he won a fight at panthers club, he was walking back through the crowd talking to fans congratulating him. Im on my phone talking to a mate but pause the call as i congrat sam and have a chat. Then i give the phone to sam to accept a congrats from my mate...he talked to him for about half a minute.

I was at tszyus gym when sam was sparring with nader hamden one day. Sam was wearing a pair of stubbies! I kid you not. Green stubbies! After he finished, im having a chat as sam is munching on a bunch of grapes..politely offering the grapes to me to eat as well. I asked whats doing with the stubbie shorts.lol. He said he left his gear back in melb, or it didnt arrive some how, so he went and borrowed some gear from an old relative who lived close by rockdale, sydney where the gym is.

He is the most open, polite guy i think ive spoken to in boxing from a strangers perspective.
