Kessler vs Calzaghe was a great fight, FOTY in my opinion, for the very reasons you stated - it was fought at a hectic pace, and there was no clear winner until Calzaghe started to slowly take the lead from about rd 6 onwards.

 

I have that fight on DVD, if people don't think that's effective punching/fighting then I don't know what is.

 

High level of fighting and very enjoyable. Only problem with Kessler is he's not an on the fly type of fighter, he's perfectly textbook and that got him fighting an awkward southpaw.

 

yes he did. in fact, he had surgery on it soon after the fight.

he was throwing it early in the fight. the first half of that fight was pretty dead even. in fact, kess hit joe early with a huge uppercut (can't remember which round)...joe took it very well though.

do you know how did he damage it ?

 

that my friend i don't know. he did have a procedure on it after...but as to how he injured it im not sure.

If he didn't have the injury would it have been a different outcome?

According to the latest boxing news, former World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (39-1, 29 KOs) injured his right hand three weeks before his title match with WBO champion Joe Calzaghe last Saturday night, causing Kessler to miss out on several weeks of hard sparring. If true, this would help explain the lack of power in Kessler’s right hand during the bout, as he seemed to be throwing it with much less power than he had in prior bouts during his career. Though some of the lack of power can be explained away by the fact that Kessler was missing a lot of his punches, due to the head movement from Calzaghe, hence Kessler would likely want to take off some of the steam from his punches so he could make contact.


According to the boxing news, Kessler didn’t want to cancel the fight because he would lose out on a huge payday, which as it turns out, the biggest payday in Kessler’s career by far. Whatever the case, the injury had to have a substantial effect on Kessler, because his punch output was way off compared to what he usually throws. In watching replays, he seems to avoid using the right at all during large portions of each round, preferring to use his left hand which has much less power.

The news doesn’t change anything, however, as Calzaghe has reportedly told Kessler that he doesn’t want to fight him in a rematch, so the boxing public – as well as Kessler – will have to live with the final decision in the bout. As for Kessler, he needs to move forward and beat the other top super middleweights like Lucian Bute and Jean Pascal, and prove that the loss was just a fluke and nothing else

i dunno man. i don't want to take anything away from joe b/c he really turned it on in the last half of that fight and even hurt kessler pretty bad (by kess' own admission) w/ a real good body shot. but maybe it would have been harder to score??

 

I'd like to think Kessler could have beat him, but like you say, we'll never know.

But seriously... can you simply watch the Goddamn fight posted in the OP and judge it for yourself? He threw absolutely EVERYTHING but the kitchen sink at Calzaghe but got too much speed, too much mobility and too many punching coming in return. Watch round12 and tell me Kessler wasn't throwing right hands. atsch
