Not for me it isn't. I picked Abraham by KO and Froch on points for the other first round contests. I honestly believe Ward is the goods, and I also believe Kessler is a bit overrated.
The only way Ward wins this fight is to implement what Calzaghe did: outjab Kessler and come forward aggressively, close the distance. Ward was able to crowd Miranda at times but I don't think he'll be able to do it consistently enough against Kessler. Kessler late KO/TKO. Calzaghe had to hold up to some very good shots throughout his fight with Kessler and I'm not sure that Ward will be able to do the same thing.
That's not the only way to beat Kessler, that's just the only way we've seen it done. Kessler has a good jab and nice power, but he's a pretty simple puzzle to figure out. Ward's superior athleticism should see him to victory. He will not employ the same tactics Calzaghe used, but the end result will be the same--disrupting his rhythm, confusing him, and frustrating him.
The pic in your avatar provides good clue :yep Even when Kessler connects he won't KO :verysad Ward by UD :happy
I doubt that's going to work for Ward. If Ward doesn't close the distance he's going to have problems unless he is able to dart-in and dart-out and land his shots without getting hit back. If he stays in Kessler's punching range he's going to have problems, I think. So I think he's going to have to be aggressive like Calzaghe or else he's not going to have a good chance to win. We'll see. Ward will definitely have to disrupt Kessler's rhythm, one way or another. If he doesn't, he's toast.
Ward does not have superior athleticism here. He is a bit slicker than Kessler but the edge in strength, stamina and conditioning will be with Kessler. Also power, chin and experience. Ward's level of competition is not on a par with Kessler's. That said, reading all the 'Ward-will-win' posts has caused me to sit back and re-examine my prediction here. I've just rewatched the Ward/Miranda fight and Ward is definitely good. He can take a decent punch. Contrary to conventional wisdom, I believe Kessler has more power than Miranda and is considerably more accurate. Miranda was the agressor, but his agression was not very effective. Kessler will be more so. I believe many are underestimating Kessler's technical skills. Taylor was supposed to out box AA and get KO'd while ahead on the cards. Many expect the same here, with the difference being that Ward will manage to frustrate Kessler and avoid his superior power, eeking out a decision. AA was ahead when he stopped Taylor, and I believe that Kessler will be ahead on the cards when the end comes here, either by stoppage or via a decision. I expect Ward to do well early and be leading at some point. But I expect Kessler to make the necessary adjustments (more pressure behind a consistently accurate jab). I see a late stoppage or a clear UD for the Viking. If I'm wrong, your 'Teddy Atlasesque" curse is at an end , Rummy, and we will be looking to you in the future for where to put the smart money.
This is where we differ, I think Ward is a considerably more fluid and athletic. Enjoy the fight, man! :good
Ward by wide UD! Too much of a boxer for the ploddind Kessler. Kessler has good moves but everything he does is when he's right infront of his opponent but remember people Ward gives angles a lot and he switchs up his stance to afflict more punishment.
