But doesn't think he has any fault in Kessler's lack luster performance against Ward. Here's an article on the subject: http://translate.google.com/transla...sning/kessler-traener-klar-til-ga&sl=da&tl=en It's translated with Google translate. Hope it's readable. I'm too tired after work to translate it myself. Basically Richard Olsen offers to retire, but doesn't really think that Kessler can get a better trainer than him... ****ing hell!!
i think kesslers large chested sister would be more effective than that guy "hit him mikkel" "hit him hard mikkel" good god it was awful to see. he needs someone to set out a clear gameplan for him and tighten up his defence instead of just backing up without his guard up that said he could look like a different fighter against froch and abraham, two guys that will bring the fight to kessler and turn him into the counter puncher
Mikkel should give the guy public props and let him go away. Mikkel needs a solid trainer more than anything at this point. I said it on fight night, because Kessler has NO inside game he not only lost, he got beaten up in the process. The corner failed him hard before and during the fight.
This will sound crass, but I don't really care about what Olsen thinks; the most important part is that he offered to step down and I hope Mikkel lets him. He came in woefully unprepared for the Ward fight- yes, Ward was quicker, but it didn't look like Kessler had trained at all for the possibility of an rough, ugly, inside fight- and when you're fighting Ward in Oakland, it's imperative you come ready for that. Not only did Kessler not have an answer for the problems Ward posed him with that style, he didn't even fight like he'd seen it prior. That kind of flaw is inexcusable in a title fight as important as this was.
Yeah totally agree Richard Olsen needs to go. But he's been with Kessler since the ams and Kessler is probably too loyal for his own good...
That's a distinct possibility; the other question becomes, is it too late to teach an old dog new tricks? Kessler's not terribly old by boxing standards, but as you've stated, Olsen's style is going to be deeply ingrained in Mikkel due to how long he's been training him. Now, there's he prospect of a new trainer smack in the middle of the most important tournament he'll ever be in. In hindsight, it looks like the best time for the move was probably right after the Calzaghe fight. I'm interested to see how this plays out...
Look the problem with getting ready for a fighter like Ward is that he is such a complete fighter that you cant really get ready for him. Im not saying that he cant be beat or anything, but what Im saying is what do you prepare for?? A boxer?? A slugger?? Ward is really a combination of many fighters. He stands in the pocket like a Floyd Mayweather, he can hit you with unorthodox punches like a Jones, he can go old school like a Hopkins. He can fight you the whole fight as either a righty or lefty, or switch between the two. His ablity to change his game mid-fight or even round to round is amazing. It was done in both his fight with Miranda and Kessler. One round he would box you from the outside the next he would slug, the next he would go old school with the holding and hitting anything that moves. Bottomline is Kessler wasnt ready for that, Im not sure that you can put all the blame on the trainer which is what is seems that some are now trying to do.
But who?Wegner won't take him as he has Abraham nad Sdunek is sick and has cut down is work so that's out of the question. Grigorian,Silaghi,Schaburow, etc are not good enough for this level. He needs a American trainer IMO.
Trainer's a part of it. Kessler has a lot of holes to spackle, and responsibility for that job needs to be shared (by pretty much everyone in camp, Kessler himself, whoever he chooses to surround himself with)
Well there is a problem with the trainer when his best advice is "be harder on him Mikkel". Then subsequently he tells the media that he didn't know what went wrong and Kessler didn't follow his instructions. Ward fought a great fight and I think that he would have won either way, but let's be honest Mikkel Kessler looked worse than he had to in that fight.
