There has been a lot of discussion recently as to whether Stanley Ketchel could spark Tommy Burns The Heavyweight King. Suzie Q has mounted a spirited argument and given us examples of Ketchel's superior results against common opponents of the two.How does the Michigan Assassin do against the following Middleweight greats? Harry Greb? Ray Robinson? Dick Tiger? Carlos Monzon? Marvin Hagler? Can " Stan the Man", with his terrific punching power,ko all ,or any of the guys here? Can Ketchel drag them in to a shootout? Or ,will he be found wanting technically ,and go down to defeat ?
i dont think he can beat any of them guys Kethel is crude and quite open to being hit but has huge power but all those guys listed have great chins. I think they can all counterpunch there way to victory in wide UDs. The only one he might draw into a fight is Hagler and Hagler has a great chin and would be able to trade with Ketchel and Hagler throws straighter punches so he would have the upper hand in the trading
cheers pal thats my thoughts Ketchel was a good fighter but a buit crude and i think skills can over come strength
Ituativley I would think the same thing but Ketchels acomplishments in the ring suggest that he probably would beat some of them.
I think what he meant was that Ketchell's accomplishments prove that he had the ability to successfully combat fighters of this caliber. Normally I'd agree, but then there's the whole era by era argument to consider (and the fact that there's a severe lack of footage), and I'd rather not get into that again.
Ketchel can be hit but he battled back nicely....Sam Langford had his hands full for 6 rds in a draw....None of the Fab 5 had to fight a Ketchel....I think in a 3 fight series which each he comes out well and is highly competitive with all....I think he would beat Tiger for the most part and have a good shot vs the rest....out of the 15 fights...he could win 7-8 of them
Sure. My point is that I would not have picked him over Philadelphia Jack O'Brien based on having watched them both on film.
I dunno, trying to sum up Ketchel is awful. His reported worst performance is the only one available on film. Other than that we have Johnson playing with him who would have done that to every other MW mentioned here. Ketchel was supposed to have an eccentric, slashing style. He was supposed to be hard to gauge and particularly savage in his attack - not a slow plodder. At the least he'd give everyone a real rough ride, but I'd favour him to out-will a few of 'em and make his bombs prove dividend.
I agree with a few things here, and basically i agree on the mutually agreed conclusion it seems the thread has come to. I think all of them would beat him, but he was certainly on their level of middleweight greatness. But really, him against Tiger stylistically is his best chance, and Ketchel is one of the hardest hitting middleweights ever to date
