Different eras, and boxing evolved. Hagler is to skilled to lose to Ketchel on points and to tough to get knocked out. Hagler would win on points. In a fight to the finish, my guess is that Hagler would land the better stuff and wear Ketchel out in a career-finisher.
Ketchel was a beast slight edge to Ketchel, Marvin never took on big men as Ketchel did. Ketchel in very close distance fight.
Hagler by knockout and he probably doesn't lose a round. No disrespect meant to the great SK, but his wide, arcing swings are just calling out to be exploited by a counterpuncher of Hagler's ability. Marvin steps inside of those swings and nails Ketchel's exposed head with jarring counter shots time after time before dancing away on the balls of his feet; smooth as silk next to the crude "Michigan Assassin". Marvin's chin is rock solid and will absorb what few punches Ketchel does manage to land.
Although we agree here broadly speaking, i'm not sure about this. I think Ketchel took the most incredible beating of the gloved era against Papke, and it still took the modern distance for the only fighter approaching him in aggression to take him out, even though he spent round after round hitting him nearly at will. Hagler would be much, much more careful and boxing behind the jab a lot. I don't think it's possible to KO Ketchel with a careful style, I think he came close to proving that, and deserves the benefit of the doubt.
Under modern rules, Hagler probably knocks Ketchel out. Under old-timey rules, Ketchel latches onto Marvin and wrestle-boxes to an incredibly ugly decision.
Fair enough. My position is that I think Marvin's timing would be what would eventually stop Ketchel. Those nasty counterpunches, timed to perfection and landing with pinpoint accuracy to all the vulnerable spots(point of chin, jawline, temple, solar plexus, etc) time and again, round after round. The types of shots that Ketchel wouldn't see coming, which as we know, are the kind that hurt and do the most damage. But I admire and share your respect for Ketchel and your comments here get top priority in my camp :smoke
Ketchel is a beast who fought big fighters and KTFO them. Hagler's chin is basically indestructible based on the evidence we have, but he only fought at middleweight and never against big-assed fighters. In round 20, we have no idea how Hagler would be taking Ketchel's punches. If you are saying this is a 12 round fight, fought under modern rules ie everything in Hagler's favour, then of course Hagler has to be favourite. Otherwise, don't underestimate a beast from a truly hard-era of boxing.
Who exactly? I only ask because I hear this sort of thing a lot re: Ketchel. When I ask the person usually points to the Porky Dan Flynn fight as proof positive that Ketchel was a giant killer. But PDF was a relative novice who wasn't all that big, was throwing BBs(light, harmless little jabs) at Ketchel and made an overall dismal showing. I'd take Hagler to stop that Flynn too. No problem whatsoever. I could be wrong, but I only know of one big fighter he faced and this was the result: This content is protected
We have no idea how KEtchel would be taking Hagler's accumulation of shots in round 20 either and Hagler landing more will have an accumulative effect
