I am absolutely amazed Johnson is still in "contention", so many years after that comically bad and negative performance against one Vitali K.
I watched the fight this morning it was actually a decent clean fight with little holding. Competitive. Johnson was stopped by the doctor after a very nasty cut that he fought on with for a few rounds. He boxed ok, came in shape and is certainly not “done”.
Johnson actually looked very fit. If he is a shot fighter you'd have to call the vast majority of the heavyweight division shot. The interesting thing about this fight is Milas chose to fight him in a soft retreat, with Johnson doing almost all the "coming forward" and Milas countering with some nice crisp counter combos. If not for an accidental headbutt at the end of round 3 this might have been a different fight. It was in a bad place for Johnson on his brow and the blood flow caused him problems. Then Johnson caught Milas a couple times with good right hands and one doozy of a right forearm but Milas stood up fairly well to the shots. The turning point was in round 5 when as Johnson was wiping at the cut Milas caught him flush with a vicious left hook and Johnson went down hard. Milas was more aggressive after that and the cut only got worse. What I came away from this fight with is Johnson is not shot but at this point is it worth him to continue fighting. He'd beat a lot of guys but not the highest level fighters. Milas looked pretty good. He's got fairly quick hands and with a better game plan he'd probably would have dispatched of Johnson quicker. Overall he got the better of Johnson throughout the fight.
It reminded me a little of Kabayel-Chisora the way Kabayel danced and boxed rings around Chisora. If Johnson is intent on fighting on, he should push for a rematch. I doubt he’s going to get another big payday, certainly not in the UK after what happened against Joshua. But if he’s happy with his purses in these fights against European up and comers by all means let him continue. Just stay away from Hrgovic.
Milas I would guess comes from a kickboxing background(common for Eastern Europeans) awkward, constantly switches stances. He looked a lot better than I thought he would(just on a hunch glancing at his boxrec and lack of footage assumed he was a crude tomato can crusher) but he's 6'5, light and had some decent skills. Definitely a bit sloppy but I see no reason to not rank alongside the likes of Schwartz, Wallin tier of European prospects. Probably not going to become a contender but definitely a European prospect to look out for.
