He'd have needed to qualify for the olympics though wouldnt he, winning one aba title at 18 doesnt mean you get into the olympic set up, especially if you get a tough draw in the worlds. I think Frank has brought him along slowly due to the lack of amateur experience he had. Give him his experience in the pro game, a la chavez Jr for example.
yeah. good gas tank to. can fight all night tbh. :bbb good fighter. his defence is a worry if ya talking about going up the levels. he'll counter punch carl's head off i reckon. :yep
Lack of amateur experience? I thought he had a good amateur pedigree, his record certainly seems to suggest it - 4 X National Schoolboy Titles NABC Title Medallist at 2000 Junior Olympics 2002 ABA Junior FW Champion 2003 ABA Senior FW Champion
All at junior level, "man power" can make a big difference to an 18-21 year old, read an interview with the guy thats about to beat valeros record of 18 first round KO's (albeit against **** opposition) and his comment was "my next step is for me to be fighting guys with 50-50 records and getting used to being hit back". Granted he won a senior british title but I think a couple of seasons and more international comp would have better prepared him for the A leagues.
This was the point I was responding to. I don't agree Mitchell had a lack of amateur experience or what that assumption is based on and so don't accept this as an explanation for why Warren has brought him along slowly. I know some felt that Mitchell turned pro too young and I do accept that even if you are an outstanding amateur it can only prepare you so much for the transition to becoming a successful pro. The comparison with Chavez Jr is an interesting one as they both turned pro around the same time but Chavez (21) is approx 18 months younger than Mitchell (23) and is a lot more active - 35 fights to date opposed to Mitchell's 24, five fights this year as opposed to Mitchell's two!
with gamboa,Martinez,Litzau and valero in the mix i dont really see the kid winning a major title so far hes got everything working against him poor trainer, unorganised defence, lack of decent opposition, inactivity etc and it doesnt help when he switches off and decides to brawl half way into a fight,
That sounds like a good fight. I'm a fan of Johanneson- not the best of boxers, and by no means world class, but very entertaining to watch. Mitchell vs Carl is a recipe for a classic Bennite "tear-up".
