Just watched a interview from years with kevin rooney. He was asked what do you think of Mike tyson fighting now. He said he does not fight smart any more there is no head movement or defense. Jab,body attack, combos, head movement He said Mike now is just a puncher he walks toward you and trys to hit you with one punch. He said now his fights go he hits you you get knocked out you hit him you and ko him mike is just a one punch brawler.

Rooney is average overall as trainer, but for Tyson, he was great trainer. He knows that style 100% and knew Mike 100%. Leaving Rooney was mistake. Tyson was great enough to last long time without him, but Rooney gets a lot of credit for getting Tyson to that point, along with Cus.
Mike was ready to move on. Rooney did ok but he will never be responsible for a guy being a champion or not.
No trainer is solely responsible. But Rooney was a good trainer. He had alcoholism and that kept him from finding new guys and needing to be good.
Thats why Tyson was picking up his gumshield off the floor 2 fights later His record with Rooney was something like 37-0-0
I think he was having a laugh. If not, I have to go talk to my pal "Hands of Iron" about this sarcasm thing. My article and thread link(s) tells some of the story
No its not. Bozo the clown could have trained Mike back then, they shouldve never let Teddy get away, Teddy was tysons original trainer and could also keep him in check if he got outta hand, atlas has proven his credentials as a trainer also. What has rooney done nothing except DRINK ALCOHOL He has not proved he was a good trainer and is still drunk today !
Actually, Bobby Stewart was Tyson's original trainer who then led Tyson eventually to D'Amato who Tyson considers the Main Man for his success. Tyson said Atlas wasn't that good of a trainer in one of his interviews. So maybe for Tyson, Atlas was the wrong guy. After Rooney took over, which was still when Tyson was an amateur, Tyson continued to get better and better. Atlas wasn't there that long. Even as a Pro, you could see how fast the improvement was with Tyson. But maybe this was still down to D'Amato's influence until he died. He seemed more relax as a fighter with Rooney and listened to his commands during training, and during fights. Maybe its because Rooney wasn't pushing b.s. second-hand psychology and ego down his throat like Atlas does. Maybe, Tyson respected Rooney more than Atlas because unlike Atlas, Rooney was a PRO FIGHTER who has been through it all in the ring and followed D'Amato's style to a tee. And unlike Atlas, Rooney probably would have stood up to Mike, like D'Amato once did, with is fists instead of a gun. The problem it seems with Rooney as a trainer, and again, its from an outside view...is that he only knows how to teach one style. And another problem he has is that he stayed in Catskill when all the talent is in the city. Steve Lott talked about this. Location and Money is a big part of it all.
Don't worry. I could be wrong. I had a quick conversation with "Hands of Iron" about this: You never know when someone on these forums/internet is just joking or not. Not unless you are used to the poster's comments.
