More steady pressure and body shots by Heffron, connecting a bit more with the broad underside of his gloves on Thain's sides. Thain still effective with the jab but copping more hits downstairs as he navigates the ropes.

Round 3

Heffron is cutting the ring down and pounding Thain above either hip bone, all shots delivered roundhouse with gloves carried low at rest. Thain is bouncing away, up and down, popping jabs from guard, arms pinned together in a narrow bundle.

Round 4

Heffron is willingly letting Thain's jab tattoo him on the forehead to duck in and rip the body, pivoting on the balls of his feet to add oomph. Heffron is staying in Thain's chest, digging into it with his skull, face down, working the body as Thain stays up on his toes, covering his face and looking to spring around Heffron and spiral outside to jabbing range while avoiding the ropes.

Round 5

Heffron is walking Thain down and sidestepping to hem off his escape route. Thain is looking to flea-jump to either side quickly to leave Heffron marching on his ghost, but is running out of room (and ideas) as he reaches the ropes. Warning for low blows issued Thain by the ref. Heffron is rimming the glass, keeping on the perimeter, reaching out and pushing down on Heffron's head when he presses in. Overhand leads by Heffron charging in, batted down or dodged as Thain keeps running.

Yeah, its effectiveness all but disintegrated in the 5th.

Round 6

Heffron is putting up the left jab at the lofty chin of Thain, staying low and leaned forward with gloves at his ears as he presses. Heffron is tied up but Thain is asked to let go by the ref. Heffron is flipping the jab out, wrist flicks, spinning in on Thain with looping rights to follow. Thain is backing up with light jabs and counter right uppercuts aimed down at Heffron's face but thrown in flight and missing.

Yeah. Far be it from me to ever reward ineffective aggression over clean work in scoring, but I can't honestly call what Thain has been doing for much of the night "outboxing" Heffron...more like just flat-out avoiding him. You can't earn points with just defense and Thain's counters are too few and too light as compared with Heffron's meaty body work.

 

Round 7

Heffron jabs and gets his arm grabbed and pinned. Heffron bangs with the right into Thain's side. Big right hand lead by Heffron as Thain is circling out. Clinch. Uppercuts worked in the clasp by Heffron. Thain is circling left and jabbing off the ropes. Heffron moves in and gets put in a headlock. Thain dances to his right along the ropes. Heavy body shots by Heffron. Clinch. Break. Thain is doubling the jab at full extension scooting away, Heffron catching him with long rights chucked in off his toes and tanking in to crack the body with Thain on the ropes.

Round 8

Heffron is walking Thain down, arms raised and winged out at the ready to punch, bobbing and weaving around Thain's jab and putting out straight rights on the chest. Thain is dancing around the ring, doubling the jab and tossing an underhand right into Heffron's forearms. Clinch. Heffron is wrestling Thain onto the backfoot and digging uppercuts on the stomach. Thain jumps outside and looses a light 1-2 with his feet spread before gathering in and getting a move on. Heffron walks into a jab while sticking out his own, pressuring Thain into the ropes. Accidental headbutt, top of Thain's catching Heffron on the nose as Heffron is reaching down for a body shot. Point taken from Heffron for straying low. Body shots whipped in by Heffron. Thain clinches.

9-9 (10-9 Heffron minus the point, but closer than many for some time so you could just as easily make it 10-8 Thain...)
