I suppose that is true..... But still boxing isn't that big a sport really over here. Plenty of high profile footballers and rugby players aren't disliked for reasons people have highlighted above.
i think DeGale being booed was a blessing in disguise for him he was so bad in that fight i couldnt believe it. pitter patter punches no body punching and the main point, an experienced referee TWICE warning DeGale for throwing technically incorrect punches. the olympic champion!!!!!!!
Is that surprising? Anybody could see from watching DeGale he would have to adjust his punching technique. That is a fairly common style in the Amateurs. As it happens he'd adjusted most of his punches but his old instincts were still there.
:goodgood post khan and degale are disliked for very different reasons as onorthordox rightly stated khan was well liked as an ameatur but the money and fan and mostly his family changed all that he has lost touch with his roots and this has come across as arrogant a perfect example of this is his disgusting treatment of harrsion his trainer who after years of loyal service which revolved around him doing the best by the kid and not looking to milk khan was sacked by khans family, khan sent someone round to harrisons house and pushed a note under the door saying he had been booted out and as buncey says thats a fact.. Degale has had a bad attitude from day one people do not want to read stories where he is boasting to the news of the world about banging loadsa birds and how hes got this and that in the bank, the only banging he should be talking about is that the does in the ring, i have travelled far and wide supporting british boxers i dont care if they are white black brown or purple with orange stripes i will support them aslong as i feel they deserve and apprecaite it
It's funny that people fall on to this "respect" card. Khan, well he was an ok kid who, while getting the tomato khans to beat up on, decided he was the best LW in the world. Then he became unbearable. DeGale... he won a gold. Well done. But, demanding $2million? That's enough to put anyone off - they still remember Audrey.
I don't knock Khan's talent/abilities or any of his shortcomings (chin), but his attitude and comments have at times galled me. He has a louder voice than most in the mainstream media and whatever he says tends to be taken as gospel by the casual sports fans and general public. So I can understand why people don't like him. I also dislike his apparent lack of respect or regard for other fighters (particularly Jon Thaxton who has been a fantastic servant to our sport), especially considering he has yet to achieve anything great himself in the pro game. However, I would never boo any fighter. Everyone who boxes when I go to a show gets my applause on the way in and on the way out, both the "home" and "away" fighters. I did admire the way Khan reacted though after the Prescott defeat. He picked himself up, faced the music and didn't shy away from the media or the public, and has attempted to make changes to his game for the better. I respect him for that. However, at times his comments let him down, and as one poster pointed out earlier his treatment of Oliver Harrison (especially his public comments when it was suggested Harrison was training Gomez) was despicable. A little more humility and a little more respect for his fellow boxers and I think he would become a lot more popular.
It's clearly a colour thng. After all Frank Bruno, arguably Britains most popular fighter ever, was white as a sheet wasn't he?
When I think of all the black British fighters who have been beloved and adored by the general public, I find it difficult to accept that if someone boos DeGale it is because he happens to be black. On the other hand, I think there is BLATANTLY a racist element with regards to the hate Khan gets, not all, but some, perhaps most of it, comes down to that. And, I totally agree with the sentiment of your post. Booing these guys is pointless, negative, horrible stuff really.
I think the working man doesnt like arrogant so and so 's .... we work hard during the week to earn a crust which ensures we pay mortgages have enough to eat n drink and maybe put some aside for a rainy day ... i dont have a problem putting my hand in my pocket and supporting my favourite boxers but when u get DeGale spouting off (and Eubank had it right when he said DeGale would fail cos hes had to earn nothing its all been handed to him) .... for me you look at the Olympians and look at Darren Sutherland - seems a really decent bloke down to earth learning his trade in the pros ... now hes a bloke I would gladly support and he deserves all he achieves....
Booing is any fighter is bad.The worst was when audley got booed on his way out of the ring after losing to Sprott.Ok Audley can be a pain in the arse, but he still turned up and fought. It was a bad knock out and people should have shown more respect.I dont like to hear booing for any fighter.
I agree completely with this post :deal Just eye balled your location...are you based permanently in gay Paris?
The very worst aspect of so many British people is their petty envy and hatred for others that have actually got off their arse and achieved something in life, especially if it involves earning a large sum of money.Obviously sportmen are the most high profile targets for the inadequates and those low on self esteem, but it also extends to those successful in business or even lottery winners!!!
I'm just staying at my girlfriends place for a month or so while I finish off my final project for my MA. Then I will have to go back home for a while. To Hull, of all places.
:huh Personally, I think businessmen are cocks, mostly because any ****** can get lucky and make a fortune. I personally rate creative talent, the ability to create something, as being a lot more worthy of praise than someone who sells toilet roll holders for a living and makes a fortune from doing it. I don't think my general dislike of businessmen (boring ****s they may be) has anything to do with low self esteem.
