Someone mentioned it on the Khan Maidanathread, its apparently true. From ESPN: LAS VEGAS -- Bunch of stuff going on here as we get ready for Saturday night's Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana junior welterweight title fight at Mandalay Bay. There was an issue Friday over the gloves the fighters would wear. Khan has an endorsement deal with Reebok to wear a pair of custom-made gloves. However, when the Maidana camp didn't like the look of them, it asked the Nevada commission to weigh them. Turns out Reebok made an error because the gloves were 9.5 ounces when they were supposed to be 8 ounces, the weight for a junior welterweight fight under Nevada rules. The gloves were disallowed by the commission and Khan will instead wear Everlast while Maidana will wear what he planned to wear all along, Everlast MX. You'd think the Maidana camp wouldn't have made it an issue, instead preferring for Khan to wear larger gloves because they would perhaps diminish his punching power. However, psychologically, it seems the Maidana preferred to try to get into Khan's head by taking something away from him that he wanted. However, joke's on them. From what I am told, Khan is thrilled with the turn of events because he prefers Everlast anyway. He was going to wear the Reeboks only to honor his contract with the manufacturer. Once the Reebok gloves were disallowed, Khan was allowed to switch. http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5909520/new-gloves-amir-khan
I don't know how much it's going to affect Khan, but I don't believe the last paragraph. Fookin' unprofessional from Reebok, but serves Khan right for going for money over an established brand. Hopefully he'll ditch the gloves after this fight
I like this for khan .. The reebok gloves always seemed so damn big for 8oz gloves. I always wanted to see khan in some 8oz Reyes gloves
Advantage Khan. He will have even more speed tonight, more than ever as he has always been using those 9.5oz reeboks
Khan used bigger gloves for defensive reasons. It will be interesting to see what this does to his approach and power.
Even though I mostly agree with you about Everlast being the better regarded brand than Reebok because they've been in the boxing game much longer, if you were being sponsored and paid a huge chunk of cash to wear their stuff you'd probably go with that company. I know I would. Reebok and Khan's team definitely fell asleep on this one. This ploy from Maidana might backfire on him.
:good But in the words of the Fox who was dressed as little Red Riding Hoods granny might say..."All the better reason you should watch your chinny chin chin,as you will have less to hide behind my dear" One up to Maidana in the mind games and Reebok will get crucified if Amirs chin is as brittle as it's alleged to be..and it WILL be tested:scaredas:
I hope this doesnt get into his head, his main worry has clearly got to be his chin and anything that relates to it in a negative way can niggle at you. I want both boxers in there with no excuses to fall back on.
Depends on the type of fighter you are. Thicker gloves means you have a larger area to protect your chinny chin chin and protects the hands better.
