Lawyers are scrambling to save from cancellation Amir Khan's world championship rematch with Lamont Peterson in Las Vegas next week.
Peterson’s failure of a steroid drugs test shocked Khan as he is training for his attempt to regain the world light welterweight titles he lost to the American in controversial fashion in Washington.
Peterson’s legal team are attempting to explain away the positive result of his dope test but it looks very unlikely that he will now be licensed to box in Nevada.

Khan cancelled his media day on Tuesday, leaving Richard Schaefer, the chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions, to confront the issue.
Schaefer confirmed that both A and B samples from a random urine test in March returned positive from the voluntary and world anti-doping agencies.
While frustrated that neither Golden Boy nor Khan’s team had been advised of the problem earlier than this Monday, he added: ‘We want to do what is right.

‘This has arisen from an unannounced testing at the time of the Las Vegas press conference to announce this fight and it confirms the importance of these random samplings, especially in boxing.
‘This is not about hitting a baseball, jumping higher or running faster. This is about young athletes hitting each other and putting their lives at risk.’
Peterson is believed to have tested positive for a synthetic, performance- enhancing testosterone. Although Khan feels ‘gutted for the thousands of British fans who have already bought their flight and hotel packages to support me in Vegas’, he must have serious reservations about fighting a drugs-boosted rival.

There are bound to be suspicions, also, concerning the unexpected strength and stamina of Peterson when he controversially relieved Khan of his WBA and IBF titles in the first fight.
Home-town refereeing — he was crucially docked two points for pushing — alarmed Khan, as did the actions of the so-called ‘man in the hat’ Mustafa Ameen among the judges.
Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, said Peterson will not be allowed to fight in Vegas unless his legal team can come up with a plausible explanation. This board are unlikely to take a decision of convenience.
The Commission were among the last in the US to re-licence Mike Tyson after the worst of his escapades, despite the multi-million dollar impact of his fights on the Las Vegas economy.
