Sorry but this is why we have so many uninformed boxing fans that really don't know the history of the sport or take a loss as too much of a big deal. I don't know if Khan is done as an elite fighter but the losses that he has had aren't career enders. I don't know what will happen of him and it still amazes me how people think they can predict the future. His loss vs Garcia IMO was being over aggressive and fighting dumb. If he would have fought Garcia the way he fought Maidana, he wins a UD and I think if the rematch is ever made that's what will happen. Khan doesn't have a great chin but has serious speed and length. He just needs to fight that way every fight in order to have a chance to win. Not look for the KO and get overly aggressive. He could easily come back if he does those things, he's young, got a good work ethic and is a smart kid.
i think his chin is bad, but he squared up to garcia who landed a big left. Most fighters would not have been in that position. i think its his poor boxing style and his poor boxing i.q. thats the issue. he fights like he's back in athens, and he has no upper body movement no head movement so he cant fully ride the shot.
hey i give props to khan for fighting whoever gets put in front of him. but he was in bad shape against maidana as well. he's lucky to have made it out of that fight.
Depends what your definition of Elite is, Khan has never been Elite IMO. Also, his loss to Garcia was due to a number of flaws other opponents couldn't take advantage of, whether it was stylistically or his opponents simply weren't good enough. It wasn't a one off bout.
Well said, Ant. A fighter in his mould would be most ideal as a counterpuncher. Most of his opponents will look to rush at him, and so the safest way for him to garner their respect considering his weak punch resistence, would be to sit back and walk them onto shots. He's got the height, reach, speed and power (when planting his feet) to do that, but not the right mentality, skill or intelligence, unfortunately. Right now all he resorts to his running or meeting them head on.
dont you think khan needs to swallow some pride and fight a few learning type opponents on undercards or FNF so he can experiment on a style that works for him, if they throw him in with another live opponent i could see him getting blasted out again.
His management and promoter make the decisions, and that will never be considered unless its on some last chance route back..
I think that's exactly what he needs to do, mate. Because right now it's all mental. Not mental in the sense that he needs to be encouraged to come back (because he's as strong as anyone in that regard), but mental in the fact that he needs to be convinced of what he really is as a fighter. Like AnthonyW has alluded to, he needs to accept the fact that he doesn't have the best punch resistence, and that brawling isn't his style. Boxing is. He then, like you say, needs to be convinced that in order to improve and develop, he has to settle for undercard fights against lesser opponents for the time being. Unfortunately his team -- Schaefer mainly -- don't see it that way. He's already looking to put him in with the Alexander-Bailey winner.
His every weakness has been exposed. At this point you would say that he is done but if he is smart enough then he can change it. Start from scratch. Look at your mistakes, rebuild yourself, be smart. Guys like Khan and JuanMa who get beat like that need to take some time off and focus on starting new. Take easy fights, stay active, gradually step up in opposition and focus on becoming a better boxer.
He's never been that great. He definitely improved after joining Roach's gym, but he hit a wall and never overcame it. You can beat him by coming forward with pressure and infighting, and you can also beat him by sitting back and counter-punching. He's open to the overhand right from range, the uppercut in the pocket, and the left-hook counter when he attacks. He fights with a style that doesn't suit his actual physical qualities. His punch resistance is low, and his defence is even worse. He has heart and speed, but that's not enough. Unless he goes through a dramatic change in regard to skills and his mentality in the ring, I think he's gone as far as he can go.
I think it all depends on his next fight... he can easily box boring and hide behind his jab.. that is the route he should take and I hope he does... an improved defense which will help him hide behind his jab will create a new Amir Khan... but if he wants to be dumb and get into a brawl then yes we have seen the best Amir Khan already.. and the next fight will be his end at the top level..
one of the worst chins ive seen from a professional fighter a his level. Hard to say where he can go next. i dont seem the point in him staying at 140, i say take the step up to 147 and give it ago hes been whopped by fighters he should be better than in his current divisions he might fight better going into a fight as a underdog for a change, his biggest problem is he believes his own hype
To be fair, that first shot would have put down a lot of fighters. Khan is very exciting because anything can happen and there are always twists and turns. But he is definitely done at top level. He wasn't even top level to begin with.
