:deal I cant help think that most people who say Khan should fight Maidana next are just hoping inside that he can land that lucky punch so they can say we told you so. Khan can stick to a plan a make Maidana look like a fool in the ring, all Maidana has is a punchers chance, on skills Khan is light years ahead of him. Facing JMM as your debut in the U.S at 23 years of age is no small feat, and people who know their boxing know it can go both ways and that JMM is still a very game fighter.
Right... and that's the only reason behind them wanting Marquez instead of Maidana.... :think If this was just about giving him a good US Debut there wouldn't be the Maidana Vs Cayo 3 fight/12 month khan clause.... they would say that the winner can fight the winner of Khan Marquez. He's being protected, end of story.
Which is the point I made about Prescott, it was easier to avoid him and hope someone else beats him to make any rematch seem pointless rather than settling the score for such an embarrassing defeat yourself, before you say look where Khan is now he's had 4 fights since getting KO'd that he could have looked to avenge that defeat but chose not to. Since then he has fought bums in ***an and Salita, beat a shot Barrera in a fight that should have been stopped in the first but was dragged out to be stopped in the 5th so Khan could get the win under his belt and then he jumped up in weight to win a title off someone who by his own admission was the worst World champion going. Once you are a World champion then you've got to take whats in front of you if you want to earn respect, not get your promoters to do deals so that you don't have to fight the big punching mandatory fights. Marquez has no business fighting at this weight and he's another big name cherry picked who Roach thinks he can beat comfortably because of his reach advantage and with JMM being taken out of his comfort zone in terms off weight. Nobody is claiming Maidana is a better boxer than JMM but he's a bigger threat to Khan stylistically without doubt.
You're not thinking it through are you, because you're obviously missing one important element... ..the Maidana vs Cayo 12 months/3 fight clause, involves a lucrative deal with HBO who promise to televise the winner's next 12 months/3 fights. This is a great offer for the fighters, as exposure on HBO schedules is very hard to come by these days. It's certainly better than fighting on some South American channel. Now what will these HBO fights achieve? They'll achieve you recognition, and an audience. Providing Maidana wins his next bout, you can bet your ass that by the time he finishes with HBO's 3 fights, he'll be much more recognized fighter, and the demand for an Amir Khan showdown will be even greater; thus making it a more profitable fight! Trust me, a fight down the road will be much better than a fight now.
All you've said there is why it's a great deal for Maidana/Cayo.. Ignoring the fact the entire point is that the winner has to stay clear of Khan. As for 'building it up', thats bollocks. They basically get to protect Khan, and stick Maidana in a meat mixer for 3 fights because people like watching fighters of his style
How do you know Khan asked GBP that he does not want to fight Maidana and its not the other way around? Who is the bigger name and known name JMM or Maidana? Who would be the bigger money fight JMM or Maidana? Khan fighting JMM at 140 is around 7 pounds lighter than what Floyd weighed in at, who is giving JMM a better fighting chance?
I disagree, stylistically Khan will find it easier against Maidana. Like I said he only needs a simple gameplan against a one dimensional slugger, whereas Marquez will give him things he's never had to think about before. Beating a Maidana, will do nothing to get rid of the criticism he recieves, as there will still be excuses... "Maidana is just an overated slugger" "Maidana lost to Kotelnik" "Khan fought a boring fight" "If Maidana landed, Khan would have lost no doubt!" "Khan would get exposed by a boxer"
I am pretty confident that Khan would fight Maidana. It's his team that don't want any part of it. Mentioning the Floyd fight means very little considering what a one sided victory it was
Khan fighting JMM at 140 at least is a bit closer to now JMM natural weight at this age of 135. JMM can even come in at 137/138 vs Khan, because he comes in around 139 1/2.
But they won't stay away from Khan forever, eventually they'll have a shot at him. However we'll have to wait and see. If Khan does indeed go on to avoid facing Maidana, then yes I will put my hands up, and admit I was wrong. I will also start to become a firm critic, and seriously begin to question his choice of opponents. But until then, being green at just 22 years of age, I'm allowing him to settle down in the US, before taking on the big boys
If he fought a beat Maidana people would be content, because Maidana is a decent light welterweight. Not some angle fighting an old legend guy who belongs in a lower division, or a journeyman, or gifted mandatories like Salita. Maidana, Bradley, Juan Diaz, Ortiz, Campbell. He has has yet to fight anyone who belongs in the top 10 Light Welterweights.
Perhaps I worded the first part wrong claiming that Khan got them to do it but they are doing it. Being a bigger name means nothing to me, Barrera and Morales are bigger names than Maidana too but it doesn't make them tougher opponents. JMM is a bigger money fight because he is a big name. The Mayweather fight was a shambles so to try and justify Khan facing him at 140 because Maywether beat him at 147 isn't going to work, Mayweather should fight welterweights and Khan should fight Jr welterweights and neither should get credit for dragging up a smaller, aging boxer just because he is a name.
Maidana is an overrated slugger but until Khan gets in with a big puncher that can test his chin out then he will continue to be criticised for avoiding them and be viewed as protected.
Maidana / Cayo didn't agree to it because they thought "Yay, we get our shot ar King Khan in 3 fights time", They agreed to it because they get 3 HBO dates. By that point they could of challenged for another belt, and by then Khan might not even be a titler holder For the sake of Boxing I hope the rumours are true about the Marquez Khan fight not going ahead and he has to fight someone who belongs at light Welter. Deals like that are what ruin it
