Saturday's card on HBO should help clear up the 140-pound division. Couple this Saturday with January's Bradley-Alexander bout and we should be able to figure out who the best fighter in the division is by the end of 2011. Redemption for Khan, Ortiz on the table Saturday by Mark Ortega Saturday night on HBO World Championship Boxing, boxing fans will get to see two bouts in the junior welterweight division with lots of implications. The double-header, which takes place at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, could deliver one if not two of the better matchups to close an impressive backend of 2010. All four fighters involved are looking to steal the show to setup a big 2011. Before we get to that, lets rewind about a year and a half ago. June 27, 2009. Victor Ortiz, in his first headlining duty since he sang Oh Christmas Tree in a grammar school play met widely unknown but dangerous nonetheless Marcos Maidana for the interim WBA 140-pound title. It was a bout which was set to take place under a rematch between Chris John against Rocky Juarez. When John pulled out, Ortiz was bumped up to the spotlight and was surprisingly met with a ridiculous amount of support as the Staples Center in Los Angeles was largely filled. For two rounds, Ortiz fought a dominant fight against the much more crude Maidana. After trading knockdowns in the first, Ortiz made Maidana look elementary in dropping him two more times. But as the fight wore on, it was Ortiz that was fighting Maidanas fight, a much more wild and dangerous fight than the more technically gifted Ortiz was capable of fighting. Ortiz would suffer a bad cut above his right eye in the fifth and from that point on it was Maidana who was in control. After tasting the canvas in the sixth, Ortiz would seemingly give up as he shook his head and walked to the corner where the doctor stopped the bout. Click here for the rest...
good article, um i think kahn should be able to outbox maidana but something tells me the pressure maidana will put on kahn will make him fight back.and when he gets hit i think it might be night night.kahn would have to fight a perfect i think to win and im sure he can but damn maidana is pressure.not that baby bull or katsidis type of pressure either, that boy coming with some one hitter quitters.i guess we will see how good kahn in under roach training. as far as ortiz and peterson, hmm thats a tough fight to call as well.i can see peterson and it would not surprise me one bit, that being sayed i think in a great fight ortiz should be able to win with his skills.like mayweather says "skills pay the bills" like most of the time im going with the more skilled boxers to win there fights thi weekend.
It should clear it up but it won't fully because if Khan wins GBP has some lightweights lined up for him in England afterwards. Junior Welter is stacked enough that I don't even care, if Ortiz is able to get past Peterson in exciting fashion I'd enjoy seeing him in against the Bradley/Alexander winner.
Same. Ortiz fought a stupid fight last time, he had no respect for Maidana and just tried to walk straight through him. I think in the rematch Ortiz boxes more and gets a decision win. Maybe even a late stoppage.
If Khan exposes more flaws in Maidana than we already know and softens him up in the process, it'll only reinforce my belief that Ortiz would take him in the rematch. In their first encounter, Vicious had large portions of the fight under his control. But he wasn't in the right frame of mind, and it seemed like he just wanted to finish the night quickly and go home.
He does look psychotic. Anyways my breakdown is this. Either Maidana KOs Khan in the first 3 rounds or Khan TKOs him in the last 3 rounds. Im leaning towards a Khan TKO. Im sure he will outbox him ala Kotelnik and with Maidana having a suspect chin i expect him to go for broke at the end and get put on his butt only for Khan to finish him off with a quick flurry. Khan will be talked about as the best thing after that at 140. Ortiz by TKO in the middle rounds. Lets be honest Ortiz is weak mentally but Peterson doesnt have the power to take Ortiz to that dark place so once Ortiz sees that he will blitz him and end the fight brutally. Im thinking of putting money on both TKOs for Khan and Ortiz.
Thats how I feel the fight will go down too, but hey Peterson might show us some good boxing. I doubt Ortiz will go out for the KO. He couldn't even KO Campbell. I think Maidana made him too careful.
I think Ortiz can outbox him if he tried that too. I agree with Maidana making him more careful but i guess its good. His dfense was leaky at times. Also Campbell has a pretty solid beard man. I dont think many people expected a KO there.
Maidana/Khan is a toss up but I'll go with Maidana by KO. Ortiz UD 12 over Peterson in a close fight (7-5 or so).
