If this is true then how come Danny Williams has been very well supported. He is very open about the fact that he is Muslim. Prays in the ring and always mentions it in the post fight interviews? It just doesn't add up!

Different time, different situation, different person. Ali could put people in their place if they had a pop at his religion or singled him out. Just watch the parkinson interview. Amir isnt there yet. You cant compare the two.

Amir is boxing at at time when there has been 7/7, alledgedy carried out by northern muslim pakistani brits, a war in iraq and afghanistan, race riots in oldham and bradford - 20mins from bolton. Khan is defo seen by the racist minority as "one of them lot" and its down to the fact he is a muslim pakistani brit..

 

I'll offer my white British male viewpoint on Khan. Listen, until he proves he can take a decent shot he has one of the worst chins of all-time. I'll always maintain that.

HOWEVER, the level of abuse he gets is confusing to me. He's confident, sometimes makes silly statements but it's a rare boxer who doesn't. He's not outlandishly rude, he's not a genuine trash talker ala Mayweather or Toney but a young man who's been in the spotlight since he was a teenager. I don't even think he reaches the level of Calzaghe at a similar stage of his career, let alone the aforementioned.

He's had it set up for him, but hey, that's what being an imagination capturing Olympian does for you, and on a small isle like Britain, it happens more often than it does in other places. While hardly Haye-esque in his boldness with the opposition early in his career, he's certainly been in far riskier situations early than just about every other Warren Golden Goose. He's on another planet to a real disappointment like Audley Harrison and has time on his side to make a real impact, though hopes of that will always be tempered by his terrible chin.

So, all in all, given his relatively mild persona - a bit of youthful silliness, probably kept in check better than most would at his age - I have to suspect that race / religion must play something of a part. And, of course, the fact that he's not always boozing and being 'one of the lads', which you'll always find yourself somewhat outcast for not adhering to in this country.
