Saturday night was supposed to be a lovefest for HBO. The network of champions was hoping and praying that Amir Khan could take his place as the network's next superstar and strengthen their hopes that he could one day be Manny Pacquiao's replacement. What HBO got was Khan's biggest win to date against tough, hard hitting Marcos Maidana. Anytime you can beat a Maidana you have carved out a niche for yourself in the junior welterweight division. At the end of the night HBO went home happy, Khan went home happy and his fans went home happy. After all, he had displayed excellent hand speed and lateral movement. He and Maidana had also put on a very entertaining fight.http://www.examiner.com/boxing-in-norfolk/amir-khan-shows-heart-but-still-needs-improvement
Khan should be very pleased with the win.He proved he can take big shots and come through it.He also beat a very good, hard fighter in a fight everyone enjoyed watching. There are some areas he needs to improve but he has the time to do this.
The biggest problems Khan got himself into was when he was boxing either on the backfoot, or laterally. He wasn't brawling it out when he got hurt. Maidana had success because he was cutting off the ring and getting Khan on the ropes, which shows some things that Khan really needs to improve: footwork, in-fighting, and defense.
is that something he will ever change though?? is he just a crowd pleaser or do u think roach will drum it out of him??
agreed, he did throw the plan out of the window, suppose it would be a change of pace having someone coming forward as much as maidana did for the first time, he was very margarito-esque! throw in there the power aswell, im not surprised he lost his game plan at all. thats why he needs 3 fights before flloyd, not 1, not 2....he needs time & more experience
Nah, he simply just got caught when throwing the jab and moving to his left. Maidana came over the jab with that looping overhand right. He hit Khan with it in the 7th, but it wasn't as clean as the one in the 10th when he got hurt. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYFqvXUwVjM[/ame] I don't think in these moments he was trying to land big shots. He wasn't jabbing to set up other blows in these instances, because he was moving to his left when doing it. If he was using his jab in these instances to set up bigger blows and trade with Maidana, he wouldn't have done it on the move. He would've had his feet planted to get leverage on the follow up shot after the jab. It's just a case of getting caught. It happens, but you want to obviously get caught less, which is why I feel footwork and defense are key things that Khan needs to work on. I didn't see Khan's head being out there. I thought he handled himself well mentally, especially when he was hurt. He did what was necessary to survive. It's more technical issues with him.
