Khan Promotions have officially linked with Golden Boy. Khan quoted in press relase saying: "I am really happy Khan Promotions is partnering Golden Boy as I know that together they will be the right team to help me continue my career as an elite fighter and to expand my fan base to the United States and around the world. I'm ready to fight anyone, anywhere, anytime and know that Golden Boy will help me accomplish these goals. " Oscar De La Hoya said: "Amir Khan is one of the most talented fighters in the world at any weight. That talent, combined with his charismatic and out-going personality, makes him a promoter's dream and I feel will one day lead him to being the face of boxing." So Warren out. The face of boxing is about to relinquish title and duck Maidana. Roach says it is business and Maidana is a puncher. So the word is that it will be the non-punching Malignaggi next in New York. Ho-hum. Then who knows? The Marquez beaten in every round by Mayweather or the shot Hatton. It is business, but also a shabby way to deal with Warren who resurrected Khan after he was destroyed by Prescott. I don't blame the kid, who said after his last fight thatr "me and Frank can go to America." Rather more, it is a reflection on Asif Vali, Amir's Dad and - above all - Roach. Very disappointing. But Frank seems to be in the business of creating monsters. Naz cleared off, went downhill and now says he should never have left. Ricky's thoughts are well documented, and JoeC destroyed what could and should have been a prmotional alliance with Warren for thye sake of what he thought was going to be more money from fighting Jones. The fact he actually made less (thanks to being financially outflanked by Sports Network going into administration) is what some might say is what he deserved. So what now for Khan. I suspect HBO won;t protect his glass jaw as assiduously as Warren. Down the road, Pacquiao? Ouch.
Cue 100 threads on the general warning of the 'Goldenboy Curse'. For what it's worth, I think this is a brilliant move for Khan. Even if he loses a fight soon they'll be in a position to rebuild him. Hopefully this also means that Khan-Maidana is made a formality as well:happy:good.
You didn't read that did you Khan is ducking Maidana and vacating if he does that I will no longer consider myself a fan.
If you go to the scene, DiBella says he's already been contacted by GBP to make a Khan-Malignaggi fight. However DiBella isn't happy with the way Golden Boy are treating Malignaggi as the "opponent" as Khan is "not Naseem Hamed" and is a "nobody in America". "He may be a superstar in England but that doesn't translate over here. If they continue to treat Paulie like an opponent, the fight won't happen"
Yep I read that and agreed with everything he said Khan will never bring fans to the US like Hatton, Calzaghe or Bruno he may get a man and his goat but you will never see 1,000 Brits go over to see Khan. Really pissed off about this lost my respect for him why does he think he is great enough to vacate a title and duck a challenge.
Yep, if does vacate then that would be a very shitty move. Also this is what Hatton said yesterday (I think): Now I think that fight will happen.
What are you on about? That's Carrotmuncher's opinion, not what will happen. There are two quotes in his post from ODLH and Khan and in neither quote does anyone hint or state that he will vacate. If anyone didn't read it, then it is you.
:think Will the WBA let him keep the belt if doesn't fight Maidana? I can't wait to hear Frank Warren's thoughts on this
There are rumours that GBP will offer Maidana step-aside money. Plenty of the WBA's 'interim champions' have held onto the lesser portion of the title for a while so it's completely plausible that Maidana will wait for his opportunity. For what it's worth, I think Maidana is actually an easier fight that Malignaggi and I'd much prefer that fight was made first. It should happen first but if it happens in two fight's time I don't see how anyone could complain. The move to GBP is definately the best move for him to make it in America, though.
It just goes to show you that being a promoter can be a thankless task. I do have some sympathy for Warren - he has built up Khan and guided him to a world title. After one defence it looks like he is now left in the cold. There must be countless boxers in the UK that have looked at Khan meteroic rise and been envious of the opportunities afforded to him under Warren. That said, Khan has obviously knuckled down and worked hard in LA with Roach and clearly wants to work more in the US so good luck to him and I will continue to wish him well. If Khan ducks Maidiana I would not be surprised but he will continue to improve under Roach and maybe as he matures further he will face Madiana in the next year or so.
I wish him well, of course. But it doesn't excuse the behaviour of his advisers. And will he be protected in the US...... Don't be silly. The chin will let him down.
