Amir Khan will take on American Dmitry Salita in the first defence of his WBA light-welterweight title on December 5 at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena. The 22-year-old Bolton star claimed his world crown with victory over Andreas Kotelnik in July. Promoter Frank Warren said: "Salita's got a great record. He's unbeaten and carries a big punch, but Amir is a world-class fighter."
Smart matchmaking...Cant see how the **** he has a big punch though, they chose him because he doesnt. No matter what Warren wants to spin.
Maidana already had a shot and lost to Kotelnik. Salita has been mandatory since April iirc, he's next in line.
Salita is the no1 ranked fighter...Maidana is the interim champ and by the rules of WBA (well at least they used to be), the full champ must fight the interim at the first available opportunity or be stripped. Its a rule that all the sanctioning bodies have been happy to contravene as long as they get their fees..with two champs they get double. Maidana should get first dibs...Khan should have to fight him first. But it would be a change in trend for the WBA to follow their own rules.
Then Salita should have been fighting Ortiz for the interim title in June. From the WBA's own regulations: In this situation Khan is the champion in recess, as Maidana is the interim champion..the rules say they should fight straight away but it rarely happens these days.
This is the WBA we are talking about, don't expect them to stick to their rules if it means they make more money . Winner of Khan-Salita has to fight Maidana within 90 days :good
Nobody should have been fighting for an interim championship. It was a bs measure to get another sanctioning fee. The champion wasn't injured or unable to defend. Khan isn't champion in recess, he's the actual champion.
