A source out of Argentina is stating that a bout between newly crowned WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan (21-1, 15 KOs) and WBA interim super light weight champion Marcos Maidana (26-1, 25 KOs) could be in the works for October in England. Both fighters are coming off of career best wins. Khan won the WBA super lightweight title by unanimous decision over Adreas Kotelnik last weekend while Maidana won his interim title by impressively stopping Victor Ortiz in 5 rounds last month. Who's the source? Mama Maidana?
I'd be very suprised after all the quotes I've heard from the Khan camp about a Maidana fight. Salita on an undercard in the States is bound to be the next choice as it makes the most sense.
Yep, they;ll take Salita. Its a very winnable fight for Khan, gets rid of his mandatory obligations for a while and frees up Khans options without having to vacate his belt.
Maidana isn't the unstoppable beast he's made out to be. Ortiz dropped him with ease before Maidana started giving some back and Ortiz had enough. Khan has also just beaten a guy who beat Maidana on points so it's already been proven that if you can stay with him, you can also outbox him. I reckon Khan will be ready for him in a few fights and, IMO, can and should beat Maidana if he chooses not to trade with him.
few reason's why this fight ain't happening yet, first khan is not fighting in october, but is likely to fight in november or december in his American debut on the undercard of a big fight possibly pacquaio/cotto. secondly risk/reward, i'm sure roach would be confident of a khan win, apart from his apparent power maidana is pretty crude and i'm convinced someone with a consistant stiff jab who circles would beat him and so is roach but its too risky for an opponent who is little known, khans needs a big name dance partner to do decent ppv figures in the UK and no one knows maidana (ties in with risk/reward) so a better/bigger more moneyspinning fight is with witter which is sure to happen seeing as they already offered to fight witter after kotelnik initially pulled out, so they're likely to wait for the outcome of witter vs Alexander or even campbell/bradley both of whom are better known (more money) before signing on a fight, plus it would be a unification and if that doesn't go their way then the other choice ahead of maidana is salita who is a pretty good but save mandatory.
Different styles completely. Kotelnik doesn't box the same way as Khan, and doesn't have Khan's frailties. Kotelnik was a good style for Khan; Maidana is not. PS: Roach has been running from this match-up in the papers. I can't believe it will actually happen.
They'll need a very friendly ref because Maidana will put a lot more pressure on Khan than Kotelnik did.
I accept that but he is beatable, mate- even for the 'chinny' Khan- that is the point I was making:good. If Khan can keep him at range and frustrate him on the outside, he will win, IMO. Personally, I think if Ortiz gets his way, he might get a rematch with Maidana anway so it might not be on the cards for a while.
Thats not hard Kotelnik's plan was just wrong, he was far more offensive against Gavin Rees. Kotelnik's turtle shell style made the fight less interesting than it could have been not Khan's box and move.
I think you're right, it won't happen. But I still think Maidana is a bad match-up for Khan. I don't think he can hit and move against Maidana the same way he did against Kotelnik. Khan is not Sweet Pea, and he doesn't seem to have the right kind of detterent power to keep Maidana off; it'll be like flies on **** for however long it lasts. The fact that Maidana is so crude actually might work to his advantage; long winging punches is the kinda thing that would probably work against Khan through the course of a fight; his reflexes aren't great and you know that Maidana won't leave it to the last round like Kotelnik did; he'll be on him from the off.
Its very hard to counter-punch out of that stance against a speedy foe. Maidana would be different I believe.
I hope it happens at some point in the future as it's an interesting clash of styles and I'd like to see how Khan would cope although I don't see it for a while. If Khan unifies with someone else down the line then he won't have to face him anyway thanks to the 'Super Fantastic Champ' status. Roach said a few days ago that he'll be working on Khan's offensive game next in terms of dealing with pressure so watch this space...:think
