Khan lines up former champ Rees Former world champion Gavin Rees is in line to face Amir Khan on 21 June at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena, BBC Sport Wales understands. Rees, 27, lost the first defence of his WBA light-welterweight title to Andreas Kotelnik in Cardiff in March. But he is on a shortlist to take on Olympic silver medalist Khan, 21, for the Bolton man's Commonwealth lightweight title. An official announcement of Khan's opponent is expected on Tuesday. Rees's fellow Enzo Calzaghe-trained stable-mate Bradley Pryce will defend his Commonwealth light-middleweight title in the chief support bout in Birmingham. Khan had targeted a showdown with Rees before the Newbridge man's loss to Kotelnik - the only blot on his 28-fight career - as he said he was eager to claim the WBA crown. Khan has won all 17 of his fights, with 13 knock-outs, and will tower seven inches above the 5ft 3ins Rees. But the Welshman has upset the odds before, his defeat of Souleymane M'Baye for the WBA title in July 2007 stunning the boxing world.
Khan's height and reach should be too much for Rees. Decent fight but it should have been made b4 the Kolotnik (Sp?) fight. Rees isnt going to hurt Khan you wouldnt think. GR has good handspeed and good head movement but Khan is simply to big i think
If he signs to fight Rees, I think that is a step in the right direction; at least Rees has some pedigree.
I'd love to see this fight. Would answer a lot of questions about Khan. I think a lot of people will write Rees off, but I give him a chance. If he can take that much punishment of Kotelnik @ 140, Khan won't walk through him.
Plus if Khan beats him quicker than AK then the hype machine will go into over driver if he goes the distance they can still spin it as a step up in class and a learning fight. No loose situation for FW
The only thing I'd be worried about is the amount of punishment Rees took last time out. I'd hate for Khan to blow him out like he did Earl, that fight didn't really answer any questions.
Its a step up and a good test. Rees comes forward, hes always very aggressive and has a showed a lot of heart against Kotelnick. Rees showed Mbaye wasnt just a lucky win. It took Kotelnik 12 rounds to beat Rees in a close battle. With 13 knockouts he isnt exactly a light puncher either. And in Khan's new coach factor, looks intresting.
Khan is all wrong for Rees. He will be able to keep him off with his jabs and straight crosses. Rees is gonna get rocked
