Khan's with GBP, Pac/JMM is Top Rank. Khan and GBP have got a bit of a problem here. They understandably want an easier opponent after the Garcia debacle but HBO pay Khan good money and want a more competitive match-up. So either Khan faces someone tougher or he comes back home for a fight or two and forgets about HBO whilst he rebuilds.
I've never really understood how the HBO deals work, say Khan has 1 or 2 more fights left to run on his HBO deal, is he free to fight in other fights (for say Showtime) until HBO finally accept one of his?
I'm not sure. I'd guess there'd have to be a bit of dialogue. If they reject Khan's/GBP's choice of opponent, they could perhaps renegotiate the fee, or say 'if someone else will pay it, go ahead'. I'm pretty sure HBO can't prevent him earning, and Khan can't force them to show his fights. It'll be a 'you'll get X if we approve your opponent' kinda arrangement IMO. Unless you're with Al Haymon, you aren't getting paid seven figures regardless of who you fight. There's a pretty strong element of quality control. His options over here are limited. Hearn would probably reject the idea just to spite Khan's backers.... and there aren't bags of options to build an undercard that Sky will accept. Not sure what their relationship is with Allegedly these days, might be something they'd pursue. It's a form of PPV, if you like. Amir could take a cut of the number of increased subscribers premiums, in an image rights kinda deal? I think they're just going to have to bite the bullet and get in there with a Matthysse, sink or swim.
I'm really quite surprised they rejected Soto. He's more than a credible enough opponent and would be no walk in the park for Amir.
Khan considers himself a top 140 pounder, Soto just got taken apart by one of Khans competitors, on Sotos debut at the weight. I dont think hes credible at all for someone looking a title shot I presume after this
I think HBO must have realised how limited Khan is, they are not going to pay him huge money for a fight against a unworthy opponent only for Khan to get knocked out the fight after. Boxing is a business, it makes sense to feed him to somebody, wash their hands of him and cut their losses.
The only credible opponent Soto fought at 140 was Matthysse and he got hammered. Before that he was fighting nobodies in Mexico. That said, if Khan was with Haymon I'm sure HBO wouldn't have a problem with Soto
Makes sense as BoxingAnalysis said Soto shouldn't be fighting at 140. What's Kendall Holt up to that could be an interesting comeback fight for Khan.
